Hi - i have been a catholic all my life and have raised my children to be catholics. My oldest daughter had lost her faith for about 4 years and was nevered confirmed - she joined the rica at our church and the way the speakers talk she is pulling away again. One of her best friends committed sucide and the sunday afterwards the topic was sucide and how the catholics says that someone who commits sucide will go to hell. I tryed to explain that sucide was a sickness and there is a judgement day - but this is very hard for her to understand.

Then another week they were talking about abortion - she knows that abortion is a sin (but she also knows that if you confess your sins and are truly sorry - you are forgiven) but what got her was they told her that the babies who the abortion was given to would be going to hell again.

As you can see - she is only 3 weeks to getting confirmed and i’m losing her terribly what can i do.

Hi,

Your daughter is being given a lot of misinformation or she is misunderstanding what she is being taught. The Church gives Catholic burials to people who have committed suicide precisely because most people who do so have simply wanted to stop the pain—whether mental or physical.

The Church has NEVER taught that un-baptized babies go to hell. There has been a question as to whether they can go to heaven. But the current Catechism of the Catholic Church places them at the Lord’s mercy. It is good to remember that all the baby boys two years and under that were killed by Herod in his attempt to kill the Christ child are called Holy Innocents and considered to be in heaven—even though they are not martyrs since then didn’t choose to die and certainly were not baptized. Be sure to show this to your daughter. You may contact me privately here by clicking on my name. She is in my prayers.
