How Can Mary Hear Us?

Hi Photini,

Welcome to the forums!

In addition to the wonderful responses your received above (and the two great links from Church Militant) please take a look at this article as well: How to Defend the Intercession of the Saints as it specifically mentions praying to Mary (and how she could hear us!)

WARNING THEOLOGICAL SPECULATION AHEAD.
ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I have one more comment, but please feel free to disregard it. At this stage it is mere speculation, and I am currently researching the topic.

I think that it might be fruitful to contemplate this question: “How Can **Christ **Hear Us???”

When the faithful pray to Christ, does He hear us only by virtue of His Divine Nature, or does He hear us in His Human Nature as well?

This question pushes out “into the deep”, and may be overly theological for your needs right now, but you may want to mention it, as an innocent question, to your husband. He may not want to be so quick to answer, if he seriously wishes to ponder the question.

Certainly Christ is Mediator for us by virtue of His Humanity (see Aquinas). It stands to reason then that He, in His Humanity, presents our prayers to the Father. The question is, then, how does He, in His Humanity, know what we are praying?

Hmmmm. :hmmm:
Again, let me say that I am in the *very initial stage *of reflection on this idea. I present it here only to stimulate further thinking on this subject from my esteemed fellow forum members. Perhaps they have some thoughts on this.

As always, if my speculation risks conflict with Magesterial teaching on the subject I disavow it, and ask others to ignore it as a limitation of my own understanding or inability to communicate.

Thanks!
God Bless and welcome to the forums again!

I think it is all very simple. All that Mary can do is By Jesus Christ, just like the wedding feast at Canna. God is the Power, Mary co-operates with it.

Semper Fi:
Saints do not hear us through physical objects. They hear us because they are with Christ. They can respond and pray with us because they’re in Heaven. I know what you’re saying, but I’m just making this clear.

Bless,
Yes, thank you for clearing that up.

Verbum Caro,

I’m just tossing this idea around here after reading your post, but since we know that we participate in Christ’s divine nature (we are deified and share in the inner life of the Trinity in Christ), then the Saints hear us because we share in Christ’s divinity.

We do not become Omniscient as only God is Omniscient. However, if we share in Christ’s Divinity, then maybe it is possible that the Saints can hear us because we share in God’s Omniscience somehow.

Speculation, but maybe it’s not all that crazy of an idea.

Photini:
Okay, you guys are so wonderful with my husbands questions… well, he hit me with another one:

He knows that I enjoy praying the Rosary, and he sort of gives me a hard time about it (praying to Mary is “blasphemous,” etc.) Finally, I said, “You ought to pray it with me sometime, and then you’ll see what a wonderful devotion it is, because it draws you closer to Jesus!

Here’s where he stumped me-- please help! :crying:

He said, “How can Mary even hear your prayers?!? God is omniscient, so He can hear everyone’s prayers at the same time-- but Mary is human. Even if she could hear one person’s prayer, how could she possibly hear/understand all the prayers being said to her throughout the world at any given time?” Then he also brought up a Gospel passage where Jesus says “a great chasm exists between here and there” or something (sorry-- I don’t know my Scriptures as well as my husband knows his! 😦 ); anyhow, it’s referring to somebody who, I guess, is in Hell, and he wants someone to come and bring him some cool water, or something like that?!? So Tim was trying to say that the folks who are in the afterlife cannot hear or know anything that is going on down here. I mentioned the “great cloud of witnesses” in Hebrews, but he doesn’t believe that refers to what we Catholics understand as the “communion of saints.”

So, how does our Blessed Mother hear us?!?

Any insight is greatly appreciated! I love my hubby, but he’s driving me nuts! 😛
How could she NOT?
He is applying the laws of physics and time management to the saints in heaven. God can allow anything He wants…and since God wishes us to Honor His mother, He can and does allow us to be in communion with ALL THE SAINTS…and all members of the Church when we are in prayer…Church Militant, Church Suffering and Church Triumphant.
