How can we ever apologise for the Holocaust?

I started this thread to engage discussion. I was going to sum up the other half of what I had planned at the beginning. But Belfarfalla has done an excellent job for me. I shall therefore quote Barfalla:

Genocide is going on at this very moment as you are reading this, women and children are being raped. Men are being imprisoned, tortured and killed. Where are we in all that?

This is the REAL war on terror. We too are exterminators, and partakers in the violence through our apathy. I too am guilty after the facts.

You are right… those of use who were not alive during WWII have no responsibility for the Jewish holocaust or any of the other killing of that time.

We do however bear the responsibility for what is going on in the world today.

A few hundred years ago or more it would be silly to say that someone in the Americas had a responsibility to stop killing in Dafur. But modern communications, travel and weapons have changed with world… it’s a much smaller world. So the question is are we responsible? Or to the old rules apply? Some say that people have the responsibility to fight for their own freedoms. That no one is responsible for saving or freeing another nation. I’m not sure I buy that…

But……

I’m getting very confused at what we can do. We (meaning westerners) are damded if we do and damded if we don’t. If we step in to help in Dafur, the world wide Muslim community will object. After all the people we would be fighting are Muslims. The UN has tried sending in African troops to protect the refuges. That turned into a fiasco… they went around raping the victim and setting up brothels.

Can you image what the world would do if anyone went into North Korea to stop the mass starvation and killing going on their? It would probably cause a world war with China leading the charge.

These complications are why I think that some governments are not doing anything. The price is too high.

It’s all so frustrating.
