How can we prove we have free will if one were ignorant of the church's teachings?

If one were to be invincibly ignorant on the church’s teaching of free will…how could that person know he has free will?

Every person has free will to do things based on that person’s concept of what is right and wrong, respecting their invincible ignorance. They don’t need to know that they have free will to exercise it.

I know.

…but what I meant was what if that person asked himself “do I have free will?” and didn’t have any source of catholicism or any other religion available…how could he prove to himself that he has it?
 
Sorry if this is an erroneous response, but couldn’t you lie down and ask them if they would rather kill or save a life? Then ask why? Not sure…
 
This is a good question. AFAIK, we only know of free will through revelation, and also an inner sense.

However, I’m sure this question has been discussed at great length by philosophers over several millennia.

We can’t prove free will or not. How can you prove something absent of any moral agencies without falling into moral relativism?

The ability to choose is more likely to be proven but the will is influenced by several factors to be really called “free” or completely in “bondage”.

Why not come to understand why the person feels the way that he or she does and taking that into consideration?

Yes, we can prove free will. As a matter of fact, we prove it every day.

If you sit down to breakfast, and there’s an apple and an orange in the bowl, you CHOOSE to eat one, the other, both, or neither. If you had no free will, you wouldn’t have that choice.

It’s as simple as that. A computer can’t choose, based on its personal preference, between an apple and an orange. It can be programmed to create randomize which it chooses, but it cannot CHOOSE.
 
Ask them why a man who murdered someone else is punished. Clearly they assume that he made a choice and is guilty.

Don’t be decieved when Satan convinces society that criminals are victims. He needs to put chaos into society.

Unless he were insane, he would know. Because of lack of education, one may not know the terminolgoy but one would know one had free will. Will and Intellect are the two powers of the soul God created expressly for us. He would not hid the fact from us that we had free will. It would just be something we naturely knew, without being told because it is an essential part of our nature. Don’t let anyone tell you othewise. 👍
