how can we internalize and “make real” the horror that is sin instead of trivializing it, making it seem like no big deal?

How can we see sin for what it really is?

By taking a good look at those who have been hurt by that sin.

Perhaps meditate upon the four last things more often? (Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell) Either that, or try meditation upon the sufferings of Our Lord (his passion).

Raniero Cantalamessa compared the Passion to a concentration camp inmate (Christ) who took the blame for someone else’s (your) attempt to escape, or to sabotage. As Christ is led to the commander of the camp, He says nothing to incriminate you. As Christ is being tortured, He does not give one word against your innocence. As Christ is being condemned to death by firing squad after an impromptu tribunal, He refuses to say your name: in order to save you. While you watch Christ being paraded slowly to the blood-stained brick wall, He glances at you; with one weak smile of love, He tells you everything. You cannot commit to any action at all, at this point, except to weep.

He took our transgressions and allowed the guards to mangle His own holy body, killing Him. What a gruesome thing it must have been. People are not adequately made to be horrified by the disgusting sight of the bloody Cross and broken body of God.

This is the most moving portrait of the Pietà I’ve seen. It may help you realise just how much we need to beg God’s forgiveness through Christ, our Lord. Here is the dead body of the spotless, innocent lamb, who “did no wrong” (Luke). He did no wrong, and yet was buried under the mountain of every sin committed by humanity. Glory to God!

If you want to see the result of sin, Look upon the one whom YOU have pierced.

He paid the full penalty for sin. THerefore the reflection of sin is in the wounds of Christ. All Sin, even Original Sin.

Look in his eyes, they are the only eyes ever REALLY innocent.

Look at his body, disfigured by mens hatred and sins.

Each Lash, is YOUR lash, Each Strike is YOUR strike, the humiliation, the mockery, vulnerability, the complete and utter defilement of the Sacred by the profane, of God, by man.

This is what you have earned for yourself.

And he has taken it from you, shouldering each and every torment as his own, saying “For this, I was born; so that you need not bear the penalty of eternal damnation. I long for you to love me, I long for you to be one with me.”

Christ was more innocent than any child born of women. If you want to appreciate the Crucifixion, if you want to know the effects of Sin, you MUST see that all that Christ suffered he suffered with GREATER innocence than any infant:

Picture this happening to a toddler.

It’s worse than that.

Picture this happening to a newborn.

It;s worse than that.

And YOU are to blame. For it is for your sins he died…

Is that a clearer picture now?
