Hello my Latin brothers and sisters.

I am a Coptic Catholic, and I normally frequent the Eastern Christianity forum. One of members (an inquirer into the Catholic and Orthodox faiths) posed a rather impossible scenario:

If the Pope decided to get rid of the Eastern/Oriental Traditions, would you remain Catholic or become Orthodox?

The thread is here: forums.catholic-questions.org/member.php?u=74008

In the interests of fairness, I would like to propose this new poll and ask:

IF THE POPE DECIDED TO GET RID OF THE LATIN TRADITION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

This poll is ONLY for Latin Catholics in communion with the bishop of Rome.

Blessings,
Marduk

What do you mean by Latin Tradition?

I have never attended a Latin Mass in aulthood, and cannot remember the Latin Masses I witnessed as a small child. 🤷

He’s talking about the Latin Church, not Latin Masses. That would mean abolishing the whole Catholic tradition aside from the Eastern Catholic Churches.

Peace and God bless!

Since the principle of unity is the Pope the answer is easy–whatever keeps you in communion with Peter is what you do as a Catholic.

Since the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church are fully and completely equal, valid and Catholic, I would naturally remain in communion with the Catholic Church…
As an aside, I would really like to attend Divine Liturgy of one or more of the Eastern Rites…from what I’ve learned thusfar, there seems to be retained much more reverence than some of the Latin Rite parishes…at least in my part of the world.

Since the Pope is absolutely committed to preserving these Traditions, the proposed idea, IS rather impossible 🙂

That said, what I find interesting about the hypothesis, is how the proposition (provocative as it is) smokes out how divisive liturgy is. I would suggest there are deep concerns here based on the answers I’ve seen.

I could be wrong on this, but I recall only once where Our Lord made a comment on what we should do before the altar. And it had nothing to do with style, vestments, East, West, North, or South etc.

Our Lord said

Mt 5:
23"if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift."

Now I’m thinking, if one doesn’t do that, (regardless of liturgy) is what they do in liturgy even acceptable to God?

May I suggest adding one more box for the vote?

“do what the pope suggests”. 🙂

The reason I say that is because the pope won’t take away without offering an alternative.

It’s a ridiculous question since the Pope would never do this without being in full communion with the bishops since it is not a matter of morals nor dogma and not within the authority of the pope to change on his own.

This is kind of like asking would you remain an American if the Democrats passed a new bill outlawing the constitution and voting ourselves out of a democracy and themselves, the bill of rights and freedoms out of existence. 😃

Hmm…
Just to be safe don’t vote democrat this election…

:amen: Though I admit, I’d probably question the wisdom of doing away with the Latin Rite.

And that would be entirely valid. Popes sometimes make bad decisions- even very bad ones.

But as you say, we still are absolutely bound to remain united with Rome.

As Cyprian of Carthage wrote, “If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he [should] desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?”
