How clean do you keep your house?

We have an apartment, so it’s not the same as a house in my eyes. We keep it between 2 and 3 since I teach lessons from home. Between morning sickness and just being sleepy, though, sometimes things don’t get cleaned up right away. I try to vacuum once a week and do dishes several times a day, but we are both clutter bugs with papers and books, so our home has that nice lived in flavor. I can only imagine what shape we’ll be in when the baby is born!
 
Between a 1 and 2. Drove my husband crazy with my white tornado routine UNTIL we became good friends with a family whose home was always at a 4+. It was then he finally came to me and thanked me for keeping the house clean and organized because he knew he could never live the other way. I have people dropping in all the time and my biggest social phobia is for my house to be a wreck. Ah, well, there could be worse phobias…

Girlfriend, I have been married 27 yrs. now and my dh has NOT ONCE made the bed in all those years! He also has no clue how to turn on the washing machine or the dishwasher…OTOH, I never mow the lawn or pay the bills, so I think I might not have it so bad…

We call it “lived in”, with 9 in the family it is not easy to keep it clean. The largest help is the “Big Four”. My son who is 14, 12 and 10 year old daughters and my 8 year old son. They are our work force. My wife and I work out of the home and we do not have the time nor want to dedicate keeping our house perfect, we assign specific rooms and the folding of 1 laundry basket of clothes to be folded a day to the “Big Three”. Ben the 8 year old is the free safety who take care of the little stuff like toys and paper, it works well. We could not have a remotely clean home if they did not pitch in.

As clean as I can considering my husband and I both work, my son is in band, my daughter is in the Girl Scouts, we all work at the soup kitchen, my husband is on the parish council, I’m the parish council secretary, we both lector, my son ushers, my daughter is an alter server, my son is in confirmation class and I teach 4th grade CCD.

Plus there’s CWOC, the Harvest Festival,

  1. Clean but not perfect - I often have to show my house to people who want to see what it looks like inside, because my husband & I just built it and moved in this year. I’m not a neat fanatic, but I keep it decent enough for those surprise visits!

Between 2 and 3. It’s never actually dirty, but it’s never ever been immaculately clean. Generally it’s somewhat cluttered and dusty.
 
Despite prior military service (including living in base housing), and being a highly organized person…we are a 3, hoping for 2 as a long-range goal.

10-second rule, huh? I shoot for 5 seconds (our germs are more sturdy)…
 
OK, so am I the only guy around here that does the majority of the cleaning because otherwise it wouldn’t get done?

I’m not accusing my wife of being lazy here. She does the cooking and dishes and with the kids, she’s deffinitely busy. But the laundry, floor cleaning, bathroom, bedrooms and general picking up fall to me. I don’t mind because, well, I’m a little more stringent than she is when it comes to what I call clean.

A little clutter I don’t mind (and it has to be little in our small condo with six occupants), but dirt drives me nuts. That said, I think we hover in the 2-3 range.

We have an orange cat. Color coordination with his fur was at the top of the list when I was picking out our new living room rug! 😃 I didn’t want my Vacuuming Muscles to be getting a workout every single day of the week.

It sounds like a cop-out, but I am still learning how to clean our house efficiently, since it’s bigger than anything I lived in while I was single & childless & living in postage-stamp apartments. Now I’ve got 3 floors + basement, plus 2 baths. You’ll never hear me complain; it’s just that my old routine wasn’t cutting it after moving here with my dashing groom & then new baby!

After reading “A Mother’s Rule of Life”, now I try to say, “Yes, Jesus, I will do that last load of laundry before bed for You” when I get lazy.
 
i grew up with not one, but TWO “Der Fuhrer” in my house about cleaning.

try having a Marine father and letting him see a mess in your room. it didnt fly. my mom was very clean too.

drawers: all clothes neatly folded and organized.
closets: all clothes sorted by pants, shirts, all lined up down a row. and NO mishung clothes

bed: sheets and comforter so tight that you can bouce a quarter off them. LITERALLY.
dressers: COMPLETELY dust free, always open to inspection with a white cloth.
walls: see above for dressers

after dinner: oldest brother washes, after i clear the table. youngest dried and put away. anyone slacking or falling behind was remanded to finish entire task BY HIMSELF.

guns: “no gun after being fired will be left for more than 1 hours, or 1 hours after the car ride home from shooting range before cleaning. unspent ammunitions will be removed, wiped and put neatly away. firearms will be broken down, and checked for defects. firearms will be reassembled, and placed in the gun cabinet, securely locked, and the key placed back in the Major’s hands. any deviations from orders will result in reduction of weekly pay, and suspension of firearm priviledges”.

needless to say, nowadays there isnt a problem of cleaning my house. i dont ever let a mess begin to accumulate. its a “clean as you go” for me.

i still think that one day the Major might actually drive 500 miles for a suprise inspection of my house. hes never done it yet, but i wont put it past him.

I can almost bet that at least 50% of those who are saying their house is between a 3 and 4 are actually a 2 and possibly a 1.

My house is sometimes a 3, and quite often a 4. We’re all slobs! My house gets cleaned when I start dreaming about the mess. I get embarrassed in my dreams… that’s because I get embarrassed about it while awake. The house stays in a 3-4 state for a few months, then I go crazy and clean it to a 1 state (which lasts all of a week).

Right now it is a #1. We have our house for sale and I am cleaning continually. Normally it is a #2. Have lots of visitors so keep our home visitor ready most all the time. Sometimes I wish I had it in me to let it go to #4, but then I would feel guilty and spend every waking minute putting it back to #2.

I think those people are fishing for compliments about what wonderful housekeepers they are!
 
Me and my roommate keep the cleanest room in the dorm. Vacuum, mop, clean the vanity, shower and whatnot weekley.
