How Clear is the bible about " EVIL EYE"

The phrase “evil eye” occurs 3 times in the King James Version but it is translated differently in the Revised Standard Version.

Proverbs 23:6: (KJV)
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
Proverbs 23:6: (RSV)
Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies;

Proverbs 28:22: (KJV)
He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.
Proverbs 28:22: (RSV)
A miserly man hastens after wealth, and does not know that want will come upon him.

Mark 7:22: (KJV)
Thefts,covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy,pride, foolishness:
Mark 7:21: (RSV)
coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.

Best occurrence, in the sense of how it is understood by us Italians:

in the parable of the laborers in the vineyard, Matthew 20:15:

“Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?”

Crystal clear. Never be surprised at how evil and demonic this world is. Neither be afraid, Jesus said “Fear not, I am with even until the end”. But first, admit and know that human nature is utterly deplorable. As Saint Paul said: “There’s not one without sin, for all have fallen short of the glory of God”. That’s me, you, everyone.
 
What is the evil eye?

I just assumed that it was an Italian superstition. Is this correct? Would someone please explain this to me because I find it quite interesting.

You’re talking about the “malocchio” - it’s basically a curse.

Curses have real effects since they seek the help of demons to harm the cursed. Fr. Gabriele Amorth says most of the exorcisms he does involve those who have been cursed, had spells cast on them, etc.

Thanks becky. I’ve done some reading on the “malocchio” and was suprised that many different societies and cultures believe in this curse. There is even a verse in the Quran about the evil eye.

It seems to be of pagan origin. I don’t think it comes from the Christian or Catholic faith.

In your post, you mentioned Fr Gabriele Amorth. Does he mention the “malocchio” in any of his books?

Off the top of my head, I don’t recall his mentioning the evil eye specifically, but he’s mentioned the effects of other curses and spells.

Sounds like, seems like, one “gives the evil eye” to one who offends by being not friendly (being uncharitable), or one “has an evil eye” if that which one SEES one must HAVE (being greedy, or uncharitable in sharing).

So, it’s an indicator of an offense against charity, at root.

I don’t know if bumping this thread will help it to grow at all but I just want to say that this topic fascinates me. I wear an evil eye charm around my neck not because I believe in it, but because I feel as if I need to be reminded of the destructive power of envy against Charity. Something we could all be reminded of I think.

The way my folks used to explain it: one who is extremely jealous of you, or of something you have, can give you the “evil eye” and wish harm for you instead of being happy for you.
