How come archeologists cannot find a trace of..?

One little issue:
**Virtually all manuscripts written in South and Central America prior to 1500 were destroyed by the Catholic Church. It is theoretically possible that the BOM was one of the manuscripts that were destroyed. **

A second little issue:
The anglicization of names in BOM could be such, that even where the place is known, we won’t recognize it, because of the vastly different pronunciation.

To take a real world example: Peking: The typical American English pronunciation does not resemble the Mandarin pronunciation of the pinyin “bejing”.

Reference type in bold. Whenever someone makes a claim such as this they should always back it up with a reliable source. So would you give us that source Jonathon? Also where did you get the idea that there was a manuscript of the BOM and why have a manuscript when they had the golden plates? Again, reference please.

Hello ricko! Good afternoon to you, sir (I presume sir). I hope all is well with you today. I’m glad to meet you. I am Finrock. 🙂
All major archeologists including several Mormon archeologists agree that there is no evidence of any major civilization in the Americas.

I honestly haven’t heard this claim before. Are you sure you meant what you wrote? Just want to confirm that this isn’t a typo or misstatement.
ricko;5153037:
The Holy Spirit who has been guiding the Catholic Church for 2,000 years, sent by Jesus Himself, disagrees with the false spirit that has been leading the Mormon church for 200 years.
I’m not sure I understand the relevancy of the years you mention, however, thanks for bringing up an important point. It is important to follow the right Spirit and not many of the false spirits. I’m certain that the Holy Ghost, a member of the Godhead, doesn’t teach falsehoods. Jesus said that the Holy Ghost is a witness of truth. Just to clarify, the Spirit that I follow and which I see working in the LDS church, is the Spirit that is from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This Spirit leads me to love, worship, and follow Jesus Christ, who is my God and my Savior. This same Spirit leads me to do good and to have charity. I wouldn’t heed a false spirit because I’ve learned to recognize the difference between the two in the intervening years of my life. Even if I know that the LDS church and myself isn’t following a false spirit, it is nonetheless, a very important subject matter. Thank you so much for bringing it up.

Be well, ricko.

Kind Regards,
Finrock

It is a pleasure to meet you also Mr. Finrock.

Not a typo and yes I meant what I wrote. The quotes from the Mormon archeologists have been posted by me on this forum many times before. If they were inaccurate, your fellow Mormons would have challenged it which they never did.

You should understand the relevancy of the years.

I think we will both agree that the Holy Spirit is truth. There are not different or conflicting truths when it comes to God and the Holy Spirit. From your statement we agree on that. Where we part company is the teachings of the LDS, such as baptism for the dead, the BOM being an invention of Joseph Smith, multiple Gods and many other teachings that conflict with Catholic and mainstream Christianity teachings. Therefore one of us (Christianity or LDS) is being lead by a false spirit, do you not agree?

Hi ricko. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my post. You didn’t have to, and I appreciate that you did.

OK. I’ll take your word for it that you meant what you typed and it wasn’t a misstatement, although I am a bit astounded by your claim. Just to clarify, when I say Americas, I am making a broad statement about the American Continent as a whole. I’ll post your statement just so I’m not missing anything here. You said: “All major archeologists including several Mormon archeologists agree that there is no evidence of any major civilization in the Americas.” Now, did you mean the United States of America or all of the Americas (i.e., North America, South America, and Central America)? If you meant United States of America, then I agree, at least based on what I know, that there is not evidence of major ancient civilizations here. However, if you meant that there is no evidence of major ancient civilizations in all of the Americas (that’s North America, South America, Central America) then that is not true. There is the Aztec Empire, the Mayan Empire, the Olmec Empire, the Zapotec Empire, etc., all of this were major civilizations that existed here on the American continent. They had major cities, in some cases with hundreds of thousands of inhabitants. They had commerce, roads, reading and writing. They understood math and astronomy. They had great wars. The question of there being a major ancient civilization in the Americas (the American Continent) is not in dispute. It is a indisputable fact. Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on the subject matter. You can find plenty of other information out on the web if you don’t trust Wikipedia:

(History of the Americas).
You should understand the relevancy of the years.

I really don’t understand the relevancy of the years thing. Can you explain it to me, please?

There is also a third possibility, by-the-way. It is possible that both of us are wrong. But, in any case, I wouldn’t say that you are being lead by a false spirit. I don’t know that. If anything, I would simply assume (until I know otherwise) that you just don’t know anything different.

I understand there are some differences in what I believe and what you believe in. I also know that I’m a Christian and I know that the Church of Jesus Christ is a Christian church, but I understand that you probably are comparing LDS Christianity with Catholic Christianity, and there are differences there too, on how one is defining Christian. But, I don’t like to focus on our differences. I know that they exist, else what would be the point in having a Church that claims to have restored God’s church if it agreed with everything that was already in existence? If people want to disagree with the Mormon religion, I at least want them to disagree based on accurate information versus misunderstandings and/or misrepresentations, and that is probably my main reason for posting here. To help with people’s understanding of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS.

Now, I consider myself a person of a sound understanding, although not the smartest person on the planet. I’ve never been a follower in society and I’ve always been an independent thinker. I haven’t kept my church’s tenants perfectly through-out my life (not even close). I’ve rebelled against God and what I have been taught. I’ve committed horrible sins. I’ve consciously rebelled against people I’ve been taught were prophets and apostles. So, I’ve tasted somewhat of the other side and I’ve learned the hard way (instead of just trusting and having faith) to recognize when evil is tempting me versus when the good Spirit is prompting me. I haven’t been fooled in to believing the Mormon church is true. I have come to learn God’s voice when he speaks. Although I have much to work out still, as far as my weaknesses and tendency to sin, I do know when the Spirit testifies of something to me. His voice is unmistakable, and anyone who has ever felt His promptings, will know how I feel. You, yourself, have probably felt the Spirit many times in your life. Giving you counsel, operating in your mind and heart, pulling you towards what is good and righteous. You’ve probably felt the Spirit testify to you that Jesus is your Lord, your King, and your Savior. If so, then you know what I’m talking about. The devil will never entice us to do good or to love the Savior. I do know, sadly by experience, what the devil does entice us to do and it is diametrically opposite to how I feel when I feel God’s Spirit whisper to me. When I’ve read from the Book of Mormon and pondered it’s words and obeyed God’s laws, I have felt that familiar assurance of the Spirit, that I have come to recognize from my life experiences, testify to me that the words are true. This is how I know that the book is true and how can I deny the voice that I recognize to be God’s voice speaking to me through His Spirit, this same voice that I have come to recognize from among other voices, knowing the distinction between each? I cannot.

Kind Regards,
Finrock

When Joseph Smith was younger he made money, based on a then current believe that there was buried pirate treasure all over the states, buy selling land owners on the idea that he had the power to find these treasures. He wound up digging a lot of holes but never found any buried treasure.

The way he translated the plates was to put the plate in a hat, along with a sear stone (Supposedly the same stone that Joshua wore in his armor breast plate.), and then Joe stuck his face in the hat and translated.

Naturally Joe had to have money to support himself during these translations so he convinced a local farmer to finance and take dictatation while he translated. The farmers wife, at length wanted to see where the family money was going and demanded to see the translations. She was given them and somehow they were lost. Thus the possiblity exists that in someones archives, attic &etc the original (unfinished) BOM might be found. It would be interesting to compare the original manuscript to the current one.

All of these things are documented history.

Apology accepted.

No evidence?
You must be kidding…
Their were many great cities in the americas before the colonists arrived.
The evidence is at places like cahokia mounds, illinios.
chaco canyon, NM. the Aztec Empire, the Mayan Empire, the Iroquios Empire…all had large cities, buildings, culture, religion, writing, math, astronomy, farming, music, precious metals and metal working, mining…what else do you need evidence of? What do you expect to find when people deliberately set out to destroy any evidence? The pyramid of Mexico City, was destroyed by colonists dynamited into tiny pieces by order of the vatican. And a church was built where it used to stand. That’s where most of your evidence is…Long destroyed.

Dynamite wasn’t invented until 1866.

That was a good one! Will you be here all week? I’ll be sure to tip my waitress. 😃

I pointed out that it seems like many on this thread say archaeology is what really matters,
How do we know that most of the miracles of Jesus Christ weren’t plagiarized from Greek/Egyptian/Persian Mythology (because there are very similar parallels and critics keep bringing it up)? How do we not know that the Nativity Story is a fabrication after the historical record says King Herod died ten years before all the world was taxed? etc, etc?
I think you mean Mithras…
And Mithras, had he been the real McCoy, would still be here today.
God is not so wishy washy. BUT before Christ many came making many similar claims- yes they did - trying to fulfill the Messiah position to yield power…
WHICH IS ANOTHER reason Jesus was crucified - because their hearts were hardened by the fakers…

Nor is God so absent…as were the gods and goddesses that pagans created.
Not one miracle existed nor were ppl healed. NOR were ppl in fact, even included in their mythology of what they thot a god would be like…
Just saying…
And I’m not trying to convince anyone of whose religion is true or false. I’m only trying to put things into perspective with what’s going on with the rest of Christianity. I’m only saying that I don’t feel people are playing fair.

Just like Christians feel awkward rejecting the Bible because the secular archaeologists don’t agree with the Bible’s history before King David’s time, that’s how Latter-day Saints feel about the Book of Mormon.
Its more than just cities that were found.
Look up Wall of Exodus.
Look up Soddom and Gamorrah anomolies.
Look up chariot wheel found in red sea.
Look into the first altars found with crosses.
So just to make sure I’m understanding you correctly, because cities in the Bible have been found to exist doesn’t prove the Bible but allows the possibility of faith?
No.
Alot more than just cities, but coins - writings - such as Moses writings in clay which correspond with other writings - and the writings were fulfilled via Christ.

40 authors+300 prophecies=fulfillment by Christ.
From my perspective, I know too much about Bible Minimalism and mainstream secular Palestinian archaeology to believe the Biblical cities are consistent with the actual evidence.
Then i assume you are an archeologist who disagrees with other findings.
🤷

Interesting.
Likewise, the Book of Mormon also mentions horses and elephants. For many years, people mocked the Book of Mormon because they said those didn’t exist before Christopher Columbus in the Americas. Then they started digging up bones that were left before Columbus, and many LDS see that as allowing the possibility of the Book of Mormon being true. Then critics say that they haven’t dated any to the right time yet, thousands of years before Book of Mormon times. Since they haven’t found all of the bones yet, keep on finding more, and keep pushing the extinction date of mammoths and pre-Columbian horses to a later date, do we actually have any evidence that tomorrow they won’t find some that date to the time period of the Book of Mormon? Then I hear about the carbon dating of the cities in the Book of Joshua and how messed up it is, and that many of the cities were dated to almost a thousand years apart. I notice that the non-Christian critics of the LDS Church won’t give up their belief in Jesus Christ, so then “I feel” like I have no less right to believe in mine then they do for theirs. It doesn’t prove that anyone’s religion is true or false, only about the right to have faith in one’s religion.
Show us all the concrete things he claimed - like burials - tombs and names and writings.

The Gospel says if an angel bring another Gospel which didnt come from us - let him be anathema.

Mormons have an entirely different Gospel from an angel…no less.
Coincidence?
THAT PROPHECY was written in the first century - and yet Smith was when?

Coincidence?
I think not.

Why can’t a Mormon believe in the Waters of Mormon?
One would think truth mattered more than trying to proove something coming from ‘an angel’ that brought a new Gospel.

But water is too general.

In fact - i can make claims of some sort of occurrence from an angel too, [prayfully not]
And i might claim many things happened, but if something is vague enough it eventually has plausibility.

And Biblical archeology is certainly more concrete than you are suggesting.

Did you realize that there are textual differences between The Book of Mormon, as published by The Community of Christ, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

This is in addition to the textual differences between the first edition, and the editions that are currently being published.

It’s been several years since I did any study of the LDS, it’s not a current subject and probably won’t be again. Over the years I"ve read books and about most of the world’s religions. I know we can punch holes in all of them, even the one I believe in. So to any LDS, or any others reading I have no argument with any relgion. As Paul said, “We should all be of one mind.”
