How come God can only cure physical ailments, not mental?

…We’ve all read about miraculous healings of cancer, etc. but never depression, schizophrenia or bipolar. Personally I’d rather have a terrible physical ailment rather than a mental one. At the very least, why can’t I trade? Why doesn’t God cure the mentally ill at Lourdes and why didn’t Jesus cure the mentally ill while he walked the earth?
Hi!

…I do not know why or how it happens… so I cannot “perform” on cue nor would I expect the Holy Spirit to jump through hoops for me… here’s the thought/dream I woke up with:

“…incluyendo lunáticos y otros enfermos y los curaba de sus enfermedades…”

…this is Spanish for: “…including lunatics and other sick and He would cure them of their infirmities…”

…so of course I had to look it up:
14 As they were rejoining the crowd a man came up to him and went down on his knees before him. 15 ‘Lord,’ he said ‘take pity on my son: he is a lunatic and in a wretched state
; he is always falling into the fire or into the water. 16 I took him to your disciples and they were unable to cure him.’ 17 ‘Faithless and perverse generation!’ Jesus said in reply ‘How much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.’ 18 And when Jesus rebuked it the devil came out of ****the boy ****who **was cured **from that moment. 19 Then the disciples came privately to Jesus. ‘Why were we unable to cast it out? they asked. 20 He answered, ‘Because you have little faith. I tell you solemnly, if your faith were the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mountain, “Move from here to there”, and it would move; nothing would be impossible for you.’ (St. Matthew 17:14-20)
…now, does this means that God will cure all people all the time or that you have proof that He does cure people with mental illnesses so therefore you must now be cured?

No.

There are a number of conditions that must take place… including the individual’s Faith, the reason why God’s assistance is being required, God’s intent/Plan, what the individual will accomplish or not accomplish… up to and including, the merits of the reasons why God is being sought (is it a test: ‘prove to me that you really exists…’).

Everything must be asked in accordance to God’s Will… and even the greatest of Servants would not be spared situations (persecution, hunger, mistreatment, loneliness, hatred, illness…) just because they ask God to deliver them from the situation:
35 Nothing therefore can come between us and the love of Christ, even if we are troubled or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food or clothes, or being threatened or even attacked. 36 As scripture promised: For your sake we are being massacred daily, and reckoned as sheep for the slaughter.
(Romans 8:35-36)

8 About this thing, I have pleaded with the Lord three times for it to leave me, 9 but he has said, ‘My grace is enough for you: my power is at its best in weakness’. So I shall be very happy to make my weaknesses my special boast so that the power of Christ may stay over me, (2 Corinthians 12:8-9)
…again, there are a number of reasons why this happens–which includes God’s Design and Purpose and man’s limitations and intentions:
37 These are the trials through which we triumph, by the power of him who loved us. 38 For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, no angel, no prince, nothing that exists, nothing still to come, not any power, 39 or height or depth,*d] nor any created thing, can ever come between us and the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Rom 8:37-39)

2 I know a man in Christ who, fourteen years ago, was caught up whether still in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows-right into the third heaven. 3 I do know, however, that this same person-whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know; God knows-4 was caught up into paradise and heard things which must not and cannot be put into human language. 5 I will boast about a man like that, but not about anything of my own except my weaknesses. 6 If I should decide to boast, I should not be made to look foolish, because I should only be speaking the truth; but I am not going to, in case anyone should begin to think I am better than he can actually see and hear me to be. 7 In view of the extraordinary nature of these revelations, to stop me from getting too proud I was given a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan to beat me and stop me from getting too proud! (2 Corinthians 12:2-7)

1 Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Isn’t it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves? 2 You want something and you haven’t got it; so you are prepared to kill. You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so you fight to get your way by force. Why you don’t have what you want is because you don’t pray for it; 3 when you do pray and don’t get it, it is because you have not prayed properly, you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires. 4 You are as unfaithful as adulterous wives; don’t you realise that making the world your friend is making God your enemy? Anyone who chooses the world for his friend turns himself into God’s enemy. (St. James 4:1-4)
…so, for the Believer, it is not about the Blessings that we may Receive from God… it is about how we Serve Him right in the midst of our human experience!

Maran atha!

The point is we all have our crosses to bear. Thinking of other people’s troubles distracts you from your own. This is not to undermine your pain. It is to keep things in perspective. Try to be grateful for the things you do have. Peace & Blessing.
Indeed.

Lmao. 😃
Too funny. The point is we all have our crosses to bear. Thinking of other people’s troubles distracts you from your own. This is not to undermine your pain. It is to keep things in perspective. Try to be grateful for the things you do have. Peace & Blessing.
No, you’re statement definitely is brushing aside/undermining the OP’s pain and others suffering of any kind. Cause no matter what suffering someone experiences you can always tell them there is always someone worse so quit complaining everyone suffers and has a cross to bear. Looses a limb in a construction accident,… Hey at least you didn’t loose all 4! Gets raped by 1 person… Hey at least you weren’t raped by more than 1 person! Gets a nerve injury lives in 8/10 pain all day everyday as their body becomes immune too all drugs… Hey at least pain killers worked for you a little while! What would you say to someone who God gave the worst lot to??? Hey at least you’re alive! Yeah… Bet that would go down well for you… I know a family of mine who suffers from the last option would try to strangle you, cause someone idiot actually said that too them. Hey at least your alive! As my relative was shaking from being in pain so much they looked like they were having a seizure! Another family member of mine then proceeded to drag that idiot out of the room and threw them out the door of the restaurant and flat onto their face!

I’m going to be blunt. Saying I should be thankful to God for “just” saddling me with depression is like saying that North Korea is a wonderful country because there’s so many people that DON’T get executed.
Exactly!

Well, OP, you can keep being angry with God. See how far that gets ya…😊

So true. First, you blame God for your depression, then you harbor an anger because He won’t cure it. Has this path proved to be beneficial to you in anyway? I prayed like mad that my dad would be spared from Alzheimer’s. It didn’t happen but he was most docile and happy living with it and died peacefully after having received the annointing of the sick. Now, should I be angry that he had Alzheimer’s and that God didn’t cure him or should I be thankful that he did as well as he did and died peacefully?

I don’t mean to undermine you. It is not healthy to wallow in your pain honestly. I have my cross to bear.

I was depressed for a long period of time - I have not been depressed for many many years now.

Unless its chemical in the brain - it is hate turned inwards - self loathing - what is it you hate so much about yourself? It can also be a comfort zone - feeling sorry for ourselves after feeling that way for a long period - every-time something goes wrong we dive into our self pity because that is what we have taught ourselves to do and it feels good to be there.

I don’t hate or loath myself anymore - I no longer suffer from depression - it starts by not allowing ourselves to dive into self pity every-time something does not go our-way and discovering why we hate and loath ourselves. Then we can heal and live just like everyone else. The answer is also to get our minds off ourselves - volunteer to and for those who really suffer then you will see your suffering is nothing - I became a hospice volunteer - it straightened me out pretty quickly.

God can’t heal you if you won’t do anything but sit there and feel sorry for yourself - you have to act also.

I suggest you pray the rosary - and pray it the right way - don’t just say it. That means focusing on the mysteries when praying it. You will always find peace if you pray it correctly.
