I just don’t understand why supposeded catholics can’t follow rules set by their spiritual leaders, and by the ten commandments . For example birth control and condoms. They are strictly forbidden yet people always try to justify their uses. Same goes for abortion if the numbers i saw were correct than 50% of catholics think abortion is ok! Seems a little ridiculas to me. Any thoughts?

I see three issues.

One, a lack of understanding of what the church teaches and why.

Two, a lack of willingness to submit to the authority. Call it our fallen nature or just stubbornness

Three, a lack of self control or will power to say no and stay on the course God wants us to be on.

Because that prohibition isnt realistic. Thats gonna work well in paradise but not on a crowded planet earth./QUOTE

You should probably check out montana or maybe wyoming, not too many people there. Plenty of room. You drank too much of the media’s cool aid of an overcrowding earth.

Training in the faith is lacking. Relativism is rampant. There is a false sympathy which looks at what a person wants and not God.

It isn’t? Those who observe the guidance of the Church find their lives enriched. Those who don’t find themselves in different circumstances. Unfortunately, many do not realize that the prohibitions are not there to make life difficult but to make are lives better. Those who use artificial birth control never know the richness of Living with God. What it comes down to is do we want to do what God knows is good for us or do we want to follow our own imperfect destructive will? The earth is hardly crowded. The entire population can fit in Texas. What is the problem is selfishness. We want it all and we don’t want to share.

Exactly and I believe younger people see older people doing it and think its ok and moms are encouraging them. Some bishops and priest believes it ok so maybe thats part of the problem.

Excellent point.

Most catholics live in crowded 3rd world countries. For their own sake, they have to use birth control.

Do they? Why not abstain from sex? Or are Catholics not able to have willpower
some priests cant abstain from sex, so you should expect a lot lot less from ordinary catholics. its human nature man. there was a show in discovery channel whichs says how life is all about sex. i mostly agree with that.

Well Im gonna pray for you tonight:) Hopefully others in here will too. Sins of the flesh are temptations of the devil. All which can be overcome by persistant prayer and denial of self will.

I think your verb should be WON’T rather than CAN’T. It is a matter of will; not capability.

It is realistic to many. For many others who can’t follow, it is because their real target is not Heaven.

Poor catechism training. I often here this one from a lot of people on this board, and I think it is true. I and everyone else in my CCD classes received terribly poor catechism training. I didn’t even know what a catechism was until I found one in my parents closet in the eighth grade sometime after I had already been confirmed. My parents entrusted my Catholic education to the Catholic school I attended for three years and then to my Sunday school teachers after that. Not once in 14 years prior to confirmation did any of them actually use a catechism. We had bibles and glossy textbooks that presented Catholic doctrine as concepts and ideas. They showed us how to approach life situations from a Catholic perspective, but they never laid out a lot of the more in depth rules of the Church. CCD seems to equip Catholics with the basics, then leaves anything beyond that to self study. Most Catholics never move past the basics, and therefore are ignorant of a lot of Church teachings.

Maybe the problem here is that you are assuming that all people who call themselves Catholics restrict their concept of a spiritual leader or moral leader to the pope, etc. I think many turn to a variety of sources for spiritual leadership. They may in fact be following what they have been taught. Perhaps ask, to whom are they listening?

Even if in addition they also listen to the authentic voice of the Church, many people in the pews simply don’t understand what the Church really teaches about her authority to teach. Even if they do, and they view the Church as one among many imperfect sources, then they are likely to just dismiss whatever they hear that seems to conflict with their other spiritual sources.

I don’t think people of ANY relligion follow the laws according to their beliefs as closely as they should. Catholics are no exception.

I am not aware of any Catholics who agree with this. I am not saying they don’t but I am not aware of any.

Here in Norfolk UK, we are experiencing some of the most secular persecution Christians have ever encountered. At work we are forbidden to mention if we are Christians. It is called ‘gross professional misconduct’ and a dismissable offence, yet Catholics are as strong as ever and that includes loyal to traditional Catholic teachings 👍

For the record, secularism and atheism is permitted to be discussed and in fact encouraged. But not religion.
