How come St. Louis de Montfort, a priest, was able to join the Third Order of the Dominicans?

I don’t get it. Louis de Montfort was already a priest but was still able to become a member of the Third Order of the Dominicans? Isn’t it that Third Order was only reserved for lay men or women who are single or couples only?

Since St. Louis de Montfort was already a priest why didn’t he just join the Order of Preachers’ Friars Division or the First Order?
 
Third Order / Secular is not just for laity, it is also for diocesan / secular priests, which is what St. Louis was.

For the unaware, a religious priest follows a rule and lives in community (and traditionally, wears a habit, i.e. a robe) – e.g. Dominican friars, Benedictine monks, etc. The most typical example of a secular priest is the “parish priest,” which is what most priests are.

As to why St. Louis didn’t just become a friar, who can say? Possibly he didn’t want to be restricted in certain ways, or assigned anywhere in the world.

I did some research after posting the above, and I read that he was a member of the Carmelite Confraternity, and was deeply interested in Carmelite spirituality. After some time he was made an honorary member of the OCDS.

Now, if I got that wrong, please, someone correct what I said. 🙂

(I Believe St. John Paul truly was a Carmelite by his deeply prayerful life and in-depth knowledge of the Doctor of the Church on Prayer, St. John of the Cross.)
 
Archbishop Fulton Sheen was a OCDS Carmelite. He made his profession on July 17, 1948.
 
Not mutually exclusive. Many OFS priests, for example. What is not allowed is being s member of 2 “Third Orders” 🙂

Ok thanks! As a member of the Third Order, is it obligatory for them to give up 10% of their salary to the Order? Isn’t it members of the Opus Dei also give up 10% of their salary?

I am a Third Order Lay Carmelite. No member of the order is obligated to give up 10% of their salary, or income if they are retired.

We do have yearly dues and a percent of that goes to the Provincial Office, and the rest stays with our community. If some in our community cannot afford to pay all or part of our yearly retreat, then they can discuss it with the Director, or a Council member and it will be taken care of by our funds. The same goes with the book we need to purchase for our ongoing spiritual formation.

I don’t know anything about the directives of Opus Dei.

For the Lay Carmelites, is the “yearly dues” varies for every member according to his monthly salary or it is fixed amount for all members?

The yearly dues is a fixed amount for every member, and if they cannot afford some or all of it they are to speak with the director or a council member.

Feel free to private message me if you would like to know the amount of the yearly dues.
