Hi CAF Friends,

Seems to me that priests are generally ordained on Pentecost; why is that?

Also, if I recall correctly, I was confirmed on a day that was not Pentecost. Why isn’t Confirmation celebrated on Pentecost?

Seems to me that Holy Orders should be celebrated on Holy Thursday, and Confirmation should be celebrated on Pentecost. Why isn’t this the case (if it is, in fact, not the case)?

Thanks,
Ben

Around here, 80% of the priests are ordained in the month of June. Others, depending on the seminary. at other times.

Confirmation can’t always be celebrated on Pentecost because the Archbishop can’t be in 120 parishes on the same day.

In my diocese, it depends on the academic schedule of the seminaries. Usually deacons are ordained about two to three weeks after the close of the academic year, so late May or early June, and priests are ordained either mid-June if all the deacons are stateside, or end of June if there are seminarians in Rome as well. The Rome men start their semester late, so they don’t get out until later either. They take exams at the beginning of June and then come home, so their ordinations have to be later. I’ve never seen an ordination be scheduled for Pentecost weekend deliberately, it’s usually just a happy accident if that happens in my diocese.

I was confirmed in November, it’s just a function of the Bishop’s schedule.

I imagine sometimes confirmation is celebrated on Pentecost. But as others have mentioned, the bishop can’t be everywhere at once. And not every bishop is willing to delegate his authority to confirm to pastors.

As for Holy Thursday, that would introduce a new rite into the day. Also the bishops are pretty busy preparing for the rest of the Triduum liturgies in addition to handing the usual Holy Thursday happenings.

As others have stated, most deacons and priests are ordained at the end of the academic year. Actually a lot of diocesan and parish life is organized around the academic year, even for parishes with no Catholic school.
