How could my father have gotten an annulment?

My parents were divorced 6 years ago, and in order for my father to remarry the woman that he cheated on my mother with in the Catholic church, he needed to get an anullment. How is this possible if me and my brother exist? I know that God forgives sin, but I didnt think that anullments had anything to do with reconciliation.
