How detailed should you be when confessing a mortal sin?

For example, could you say “many times” if you don’t know the exact number of times you committed the sin or would you be better off saying for example “everyday for the past [number of years]”?

Your example is very good. If numbers are hard to present, then “many times” is a perhaps good enough, but, if it really has been “every day for the past [number of years]” then that is better. Or “most days”, “nearly every week”, etc.

It’s best to be brief, blunt and truthful. If the confessor needs more detail then he will ask. Plus, afterwards you won’t worry that your confession was inadequate.
