This may sound like a stupid question but my understanding is that God’s Angels also have the Gift of Free Choice although in somewhat a different fashion than the way humans do. The Beatific Vision of Jesus (“God”) is always in their mists.

Our original Sin was resultant through both Disobedience and Pride against God.

Our Ancestral Parents Adam & Even were tempted in the Garden by the serpent (“Devil”) and did eat of the Tree of Knowledge and their eyes were opened to both Good & Evil.

How did God’s Angels learn of Evil? Is it also through Disobedience and Pride against God. newadvent.org/cathen/04710a.htm

Thoughts appreciated.

Firstly, angels didn’t enjoy the Beatific Vision until after some fell and become demons. So Satan, being as high in a position as he initially was, never actually enjoyed the Beatific Vision. That is why he was able to sin, and his sin is unforgivable by virtue of fact that he was extraordinarily aware of God’s existence.

Secondly, angels didn’t learn about evil. Evil is not something in it’s own right, but is a lack of something - a lack of good. The philosophers of old (St. Irenaeus, St. Thomas Aquinas, etc) called this “privation”. So, the angels didn’t really learn about evil per se. Angels became evil by rejecting God’s will and becoming rebellious, meaning they departed from God and were consequently thrown to Earth: “Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short” (Revelations 12:12). In other words, because they departed from God, they were removed from the presence of complete goodness, and were thus made evil. This also indirectly explains why no demons are in Heaven.

I don’t know! But I’ve heard that that angels were created with an intellect vastly superior to man’s. That would lead me to believe that they were created having this knowledge already.

Q. How Did God’s Angels Learn About Evil?

A. Via a Google search? :compcoff:

Some speculate that since it’s impossible to sin when in God’s presence, ‘beatific vision’, there was a time when the angels were separated from the beatific vision and tested for obedience by God. And Satan and his demons chose to sin and were cast into hell. As for the details, I don’t think anyone knows…

The possibility of evil is a consequence of being created (Scott Hahn has a nice discussion about it). Angels are created beings thus not perfect or unchangeable. Evil stops being a possibility only when God shares in his divinity with the created beings.

👍 Thanks! One of the best answers I’ve seen yet.

I’ve a question. When you say perfect, do you mean sinless?

Thanks

I heard a Catholic Priest say the the devil was not cast into hell, but thrown down to Earth.

I think at the Second Coming the Devil will be thrown into Hell
