I am wondering, how did Jesus gain his knowledge?

His own parents, Joseph and Mary, were surprised at having a holy son.
His teachers, who I assume taught other students, were surprised at his knowledge. But he was the only one to become the Christ.
And I don’t recall reading that his knowledge was a type of genetic memory or taught to him by angels, Malachim, etc.

So how did he know he could walk on water, cure blindness, establish a church, etc.?

Are there any extra-Biblical books that discuss this topic?

Since Jesus was God before time He always had the knowledge… However being human, I’m sure he may have surrendered part of that knowledge until needed and then it was revealed by the Holy Spirit. >>> After all he wasn’t born talking and telling Mary “I’m hungry” >> He cried like all newborns… He was man just like us, except for sin. >> Around 12 years of age he stayed behind in the temple and amazed all who were there with his knowledge. >> He was God and Man… So like the Holy Spirit reveals to us humans, as we need knowledge, I’m sure The Holy Spirit revealed to Jesus what He needed, when He needed it.

I’m not a theologian, but I have read scripture… If I am wrong, please feel free to correct my theory.

My impression of this issue is similar to WilliamB’s. It seems that at some point it was revealed to him personally that he had a special mission. I seem to remember seeing in some documentary or reading somewhere about jewish traditions that deal with the early life of Jesus. There also may be some stories in the Gnostic traditions and teaching that refer to Jesus maybe raising a playmate form the dead. While definitely not part of Cannon, perhaps they are rooted in some truth. Either way, my general impression from reading scripture and from other sources is that Christ was a more or less ordinary child but vaguely aware that he had greater abuility than most. Certainly, his parents must have told him or guided him in a way that intimated his special nature. Then at some point he becomes aware. I also look to the story of his being left behind at the temple as the event or close to the event. Certainly by the time of the wedding in Cana he is fully aware.

I am also far from being an expert and would love it if the more learned members of the forum would expound and gently correct on this subject.

Luke ch 2, 41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.

42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual.

43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without his parents knowing it.

44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day’s journey that they went to look for him among their relations and acquaintances.

45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere.

46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions;

47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intelligence and his replies.

48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, ‘My child, why have you done this to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.’

49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?'

He was God before man and always knew although like the above post says he cried like a newborn and crawled like a toddler.

With very few exceptions, all of Jesus’s teachings can be found in one form or another in the Old Testament. In the books of Moses, the Psalms, the Prophets. Jesus adds very little to the teachings that were already there. He quotes Scripture quite often. One I found in a scholarly book that was sympathetic to Christianity but not devoutly promoting it was the observation that the gospels have all the valuable and timeless teachings of God with no “second rate” material. Accepting that idea leaves a person with the thought that there was something wrong with Moses, the Prophets, Solomon and all the other figures of the old testament but the fact is that there was something wrong with all of them. None of them were the Messiah. They were all sinners. Scripture notes that in various places.

It’s the “second rate teachings” that Jesus lacked that singles him out more than anything that he actually taught.

Maybe that’s not the whole story but it makes a measure of sense to me

Being Divine He always had the knowledge. Not being human He went through the process of growing in stature and wisdom.

He’s part of the Holy Trinity. God, the Holy Spirit, Jesus. I don’t want to sound to ‘scifi’ but one would imagine that being ‘One’ this Trinity is in constant comunication…

On the other hand, to bring it a bit down to earth. You know those talented kids that play Mozard and Jazz at the age of three. In general, nobody taught them anything, they just started playing. Guess with Jesus it was kind of the same.

I’m not sure I can agree with that or maybe I’m misunderstanding something. I have always understood that Jesus was both fully human and fully Divine.

Knowledge of Jesus Christ
newadvent.org/cathen/08675a.htm

As God-made-man, Jesus always possessed all knowledge in His Divine Nature. His human nature had knowledge from a number of sources. Certainly, he could learn in the usual way of humanity (acquired knowedge). But his human nature also had the Beatific Vision of God (of His own Divine Nature), and certainly knowledge came to him in this manner (infused knowledge). So the two sources of his knowledge are in accord with his two natures, and their intimate union as one person.

Well, Ron, your knowledge is somewhat above my pay grade, but I want to understand. The direction of this thread, or at least my participation, seems to be at what point did Jesus come in to full knowledge of his role and powers. I don’t disagree with anything in your post mainly because I’m not sure I understand all of the subtle knowledge it contains. So, my question to you is: are you saying that Jesus even as an infant fully understood his role and capabilities? I think it’s interesting.

I will chime in - yes, absolutely. How could God hide from Himself?

Wow! That’s strong. Now I’m not trying to be smart alek or anything, but since all things are possible for God, couldn’t it be that God would have provided some process by which Jesus was only somewhat aware and then the veil, sort of speak, was gradually lifted as he grew? Doesn’t scripture say that he grew in wisdom? Hey, I think that kind of works!

Your thoughts please. This gets more interesting with each post.

Not all things are possible with God. There are things that He cannot do.

He cannot lie
He cannot be deceived
He cannot be untrue to His own nature

If you had to enter into a 2d world (flatlander) being a 3D creature would be a unique experience. You would gain the perspective of the flatlander and deal with that existence.

God being pure spirit had to enter our realm and deal with humans as a human. God (Jesus) also had to enter time.

Well, two things, Buffalo. While I can’t say you’re wrong, you are being a bit of a smart aleck. Second, I think you’re ignoring my point. That’s fine.

God Bless. Happy New Year.

His knowledge as Second Divine Person is eternal and inherent not gained.

Some of His knowledge as human being is certainly gained by learning as every human being learns. (Luke 2:52)

Since His human nature was assumed by His Divine Person, His knowledge about the supernatural things is inherent, not learned of infused by the Holy Spirit.

The most probable theological opinion is that the consciousness of His divine knowledge needed the development of His human conscience in general. Almost certainly the (human) conscience of His own divinity was present at age 12 when He visited Jerusalem with His parents.

We must remember that the intellect/knowledge is a power of the soul, which is particular to the nature. Jesus in his human nature would have had a human intellect and its natural way of acquiring knowledge. Whatever supernatural knowledge He had would have been infused knowledge according to the nneds of the situation and as per the divine plan. If we assumed that he had unrestricted access to the inherent knowledge residing in His divine nature, it would mean that Human nature was just for namesake, which is not true. Hence I’ll go with the newadvent explanation that He had the beatific vision and hence knew who He was and for what He had been incarnated, but beyond that He needed to touch base with his heavenly father at every stage to keep Himself fully tuned into the divine plan for Him. It would have been during these tuning sessions (prayer time) that He would have been infused with supernatural knowledge necessary for the activities planned for the day.

Kenosis is key to understanding. He emptied himself of deity to be found in the form of man. Though he was rightly God, he suppressed the attributes of God in order to be a man. Why? In order to be tempted in every way as we are. If he had supernatural knowledge of who he was, he was not tempted like us. All his temptation was a facade.

But he was really tempted and did not sin. It is this perfect life in the face of the same temptations that removes our excuses and condemns us.

How then did he know? Before he left his high station to become the child of Mary, he wrote notes to himself as to who he was and what he was to do. These notes were hidden in childish riddle, so that as a child he could discover them in the scriptures.

Hidden in Gen 1.1 “In Christ, the not dark separated the eternal dual -natured Christ”
Hidden in Gen 2.21 “And God caused Christ to die and he died, and he married a certain limping side and delivered mankind”

All of the Old Testament is filled with such riddles revealing who he was and what he was to do.

He knew he could walk on water because he was the firmament between the waters of law and grace.

The Old Testament prophets were commanded to live out dinner theater as a form of prophecy. One married a prostitute, One made sand castles and destroyed them. One ate dung, etc. All of these were prophecies of Christ and his work.

Jesus saw that the Father had prepared dinner theater for him to walk in and he willingly participated to show that he understood who he was and what he was to do.

When he saw Zachhaeus in the tree. He saw a man whose name means pure but who was the chief representative of mammon. It was a picture of Christ bearing our sin on the cross. He invited himself to dinner because when Christ came off the cross he went to the banquet at the marriage of the Lamb.

When he saw Lazarus ( a name for Eliezer the high priest) who was sickly, he saw himself as the high priest who could not be a priest because he was from the wrong tribe. He would have to die first to become the high priest. So he lets Lazarus die.

As a dinner theater of his own death he is faced with the old temptation to run from the cross, which is why he groans deeply. But showing his understanding and faith he command Lazarus to come forth from the grave. The Father rewards him with the miracle of the resurrection to complete the dinner theater.

Each miracle is a conversation between Father and Son, where the Son shows he understands his mission by a step of obedience, and is rewarded with a miracle to encourage his faith to face death on the cross.

He stayed in the temple at age 12 because it was prophesied the he would serve a handful of sheaves for 12 years then ‘rebel’.

It was not yet his time at the Wedding of Cana which is why he took instruction from his mother, but he was ‘weaned’ from her there. When he return to Jerusalem ‘he knew he was God’ as it was prophesied in the history of Manasseh.

He knew the terrible tribulation of the cross from the prophesy hidden in the story of Eli’s Son. He knew the account of his own birth not only from his mother, but from the prophesy hidden in the story of Judah and Tamar.

He knew he would be resurrected after the cross because of the shine on Moses face after he hid in the cleft of the rock. He knew he would bring life to a fallen world because when Moses spilled water (the word) on the ground it became blood (life is in the blood).

Silly childish riddles scorned and mocked by the learned theologians but understood by the innocent child Jesus gave him a doctorate in theology before he was twelve. We can still see them if we are willing to become as little children.

On the road to Emmaus he said that all the scriptures spoke of Him. Here the Father speak to Jesus at Gethsemane in the words said to Cain “If you do right, won’t you be lifted up?” Each odd story of a judge contains riddles revealing Christ. Each king a picture of Christ.

Uzziah did all things according to his father. Jesus was perfectly obedient to his.
Then he offer incense in the temple as Jesus offered the sweet savor of perfect obedience in the temple of his own body.
Uzziah was made leperous as Jesus was made to be sin.
Uzziah was cast out as Jesus was taken outside the city.
Uzziah was then known as Azzariah… the name of the high priest, just as Jesus was made out high priest.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, a shadow of the Father Son and Holy Ghost. Isaac the Son who had to die, Jacob the resurrected Christ with the Holy Ghost who is fruitful and multiplying.

All the laws shadows of Christ.
Leprosy a shadow of sin.
The leper must shave his head, as Jesus lost his covering when the Father left him on the cross.
The leper covers his lip, an action taken when your prayer is not heard, and Jesus prayer “Remove this cup”
The leper is outside the camp as Jesus was cast out.
When the leper is covered from toe to head with leprosy he is declared clean, just as Jesus, after he bore our in totally was Holy White in resurrection.
Then the leper goes through a ritual the same as the priest initiation, just as Christ became our high priest.

He was the clean animal who ruminates on the law and it produces a split (separated Holy) walk.

He was the tree of Life and the tree of death depending whether we approach him in obedience or rebellion. He was the water of life and the water of judgement.

All silly riddles which revealed Christ to Christ. David said “The Lord said to my Lord…”
because Christ taught Christ through the silly riddles.

So, I feel like we’re agreeing. If not tell me so. My theory is that while the knowledge was fully contained within his being, he needed the human side to mature to a point where he could process and handle the knowledge of himself as also being one in God. This is what I mean by a process. As his human side matured, he gradually gained in the knowledge of himself and his mission. This comes to full or almost full fruition at the age of twelve when he is found in the temple preaching. I just can’t imagine how an infant could have possibly dealt with being able to raise the dead. I think God is smarter than to do that, but I could be wrong.

Jesus was called Rabbi in many different parts of the Gospel. That wasn’t a title that was just thrown around back then, it means that he was formally educated as such. The Bible doesn’t reveal what he was doing between age 12 and age 30 but you can be sure that much of it was likely spent learning, as the process of becoming a Rabbi was and still is arduous.

Notice twice he is called “Rabboni” which literally was the highest title given, a teacher great eminence.

Mark 9:5 and Mark 11:21 by Peter
John 1:38 by two disciples of John the Baptizer
John 1:49 by Nathanael
John 3:2 by Nicodemus
John 6:25 by the crowds
John 4:31; 9:2; 11:8 by disciples not specified
Matthew 26:25, 49; Mark 14:45 by Judas

John 20:16; Mark 10:51 he is called “Rabboni”

As far as knowing he was devine, I’ll leave that up to someone more knowledgable than me!

Though he was rightly God, he suppressed the attributes of God in order to be a man. Why? In order to be tempted in every way as we are. If he had supernatural knowledge of who he was, he was not tempted like us. All his temptation was a facade.
I don’t understand how you say that He had no supernatural knowledge of who He was. He was coming straight from the baptism in the Jordan, where He was publicly declared by God to be the Son of God.
