How did Jesus suffer a greatest shoulder injury if He only carried the cross beam?

Dear Frend,
From having reviewed different thoughts on a horizontal beam only vs. the whole cross or an X shaped cross. There is only 1 nail found in a heel. The angle was for an X cross. Peter had an X cross. But, they had more than 1 form of crucifixion. Nail in hands or wrist??? I don’t care! It hurt big time.

Definitely in the palm.

The wrist would have been too risky as the cross was supposed to torture, not just make its victims bleed out quickly.

But wait shouldn’t Christ’s body have torn his hands from the cross?

That’s where ropes come in.

No doubt that would hurt.

But what else can you do to redeem the entire human race?

Destot’s space is in the palm near the wrist and supported as the nail’s place by some studies on the Shroud of Turin. Yes I know there’s no consensus.

considering that Jesus was about to be nailed to a cross, given only vinegar to drink and bled & stabbed to death

Jesus’ non descript orthopaedic shoulder trauma is probably not a major cause of His death

fatigue, dehydration & torture seems to have had done the trick

I had never heard or thought about that @Dan_Defender, good post!

It’s not important, but I agree. Near wrist/palm w ropes. The dislocation of the shoulder, most likely, occurred pulling his arm to nail hand to cross.

imho; Jesus died from torture, fatigue, dehydration & Exsanguination

I have worked as a delivery driver for over 30 years. On a daily basis I have to carry heavy long items…metal polls etc.

I have injured my shoulder several times even without falling carrying long stuff.
You have to balance a heavy long parcel just right. Even then, the jolt of just stepping down a stair can bruise the ligaments. You also have to balance the weight slightly heavier to the rear of shoulder and so your hand is slightly pressing down on the object in front of you. If the weight slightly shifts rearward your shoulder is wrenched upward and can easily dislocate your shoulder. Falling forward would cause the forward end of the beam to strike the ground, wrenching your arm upward, and would likely rip the ligaments in your shoulder. To then hang from the cross with a torn up shoulder would cause so much pain, I imagine most people would pass out.

To answer your question…Yes, falling carrying a single beam on your shoulder would likely be excruciatingly painful.

A lot of wood was taken up for tunneling in for King Solomon’s copper mines.
The OT also has mentions importing wood, like the “cedars of Lebanon”. The Holy land being by the sea made it practical getting shipments of wood from elsewhere. Then it could be transported from a port town using ox carts.

Have you ever picked up a moderate sized log of wood? It’s really heavy, and you generally need someone else to help you carry it.
The cross beam, was probably about six feet long, and quite thick. That would make for a very heavy piece of wood. To carry, or even drag something that big, would be difficult, and if it was resting on Christ’s shoulder, over the time to travel to the crucifixion site, it would dig deep into His shoulder. That would make for an extremely painful wound.
