How did John the Baptist get his name?

Was John the Baptist the first of what we call Baptists? Or was he called that simply because he baptized people?
 
The term Baptist, as used for a religious denomination, did not get its start until the sixteenth century at the very earliest. John the Baptist (or “the Baptizer”) was indeed given that name because he baptized people.
