Just a thought, Xavier, but *Dark Night *might not be the best volume to start reading John of the Cross with. It’s focus is on the passive purification of our souls by God before he leads us into infused contemplation. From hearing people talk of the book, it seems many misinterpret it as applying to those times when we don’t feel God’s presence in our lives…and more or less miss the point of the book.

In my opinion, a better place to start would be his Ascent of Mt. Carmel.
Thank you.
Have you read Ascent of Mt Carmel? If so how did it help with your walk with God?

In nomine Jesu I offer you peace Xavier,

Yes, I have “The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross” by the Institute of Carmelite Studies and have read “The Sayings of Light and Love” as well as “The Ascent of Mount Carmel”. He is profound to say the least but one would have to be ready for him.

Prefection does not lie in the virtues that the soul knows it has, but in the virtues that our Lord sees in it. This is a closed book; hence once has no reason for presumption, but mjust remain prostrate on the ground with respect to self. - St. John of the Cross

Peace, Love and Blessings,
This reminds me of Michelangelo seeing an angel in the block of marble. God sees the end of a thing from the beginning.
Again this has been helpfull to me as we speak.😃
God seems to be chipping away the old to create the new in my life, this can be an uncomfortable process and requires my increased submission to Him. I guess this is what is called crucifing the flesh. :crying:

I agree with you mtr01, I’ve read as they have been presented in the The Colleted Works of St. John of the Cross and I strongly feel the they have been presented in this order for a reason. The Sayings of Light and Love are incredible to reflect and serve to prime the reader to the more indepth works like Ascent and Dark Night. I have trouble attempt to over critique in a nutshell concerning St. John of the Cross. Perhap it is because his work touches us so intimately. I don’t know.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jews descended form Abraham. Before then, the Bible talks abojut the history of mankind, not particularly of Jews (Adam and Eve were the first humans, not first Jews).
Abraham came after Noah, so Jews didn’t exist in Noah’s time.
You are correct. Jews and Gentiles in Noah’s time did not exist. So if we speak about that era of Noah, it is not proper to identify those people as “Jews” or “Gentiles.”

In nomine Jesu I offer you all peace,

I notice from my study that after the flood, God entered into a Covenant with Noah, whom it is taught decended all living people of the whole earth.

What do we know about this covenant in which we “all” share by our decendancy from Noah?

In a sense, we are all, regardless at Covenant People due to Noah.

Peace, Love and Blessings,
