How did Shaul die?

At the end of The 1st book of Samuel, Shaul is reported to commit suicide, while at start of The 2nd Book of Samuel we learn he was killed by one of his followers.

Can somebody explain me this?
 
From the Haydock Commentary (comments on 2 Kings which was the old name for 2 Samuel):
Ver. 10. I killed him. This story of the young Amalecite was not true, as may easily be proved by comparing it with the last chapter of the foregoing book. (Challoner)

Yeah, the Haydock Commentary probably has it right. The Amalekite may have been thinking that claiming to have killed Saul would get him rewarded, since he (Saul) was, after all, David’s enemy.

On the other hand, Saul’s attempt at suicide (falling on his sword) may have been unsuccessful, and he A’kite may have actually finished him off.

I trust the Haydock Commentary. It is an orthodox Catholic commentary. I did not post from any Protestant commentaries, but Matthew Henry also agrees.
