I’ve often wondered about where the Magi got their knowledge of Christ since there appears to be no setup beforehand. I’ve heard that they are a myth. Does anyone know what the tradition is about them?

Here’s a theory that I think makes sense.

Magi is a term for the wise men from Persia. The most influential Biblical figure in Persia is Daniel. Daniel was placed in charge of all the wise men (a.k.a. Magi) and they were commanded to worship Daniel’s God. Daniel also gave a messianic prophecy which stated when Christ would come. Therefore, magi who adhered to Daniel’s teachings waited for the prophecy to be fulfilled.

You can read the theory here.

I recommend you watch the DVD “The Bethlehem Star”.
It’s very well done, (not Catholic) but an excellent reading of the MANY references to the Messiah and what would occur in Scripture, prophecy, and in the movement of the heavens.
A really intriguing thing to watch.

I have read (or heard) somewhere that these “wise men” or astrologers, as they probably were in those days, were familiar with the writings and prophecies of other cultures in that part of the world, and had probably read or heard about the prophecies of Israel concerning the Messiah. Which make sense to me, as the people did not live in isolation, were familiar with their friends and enemies, and engaged in trade and cultural exchange frequently, as one can read in the Bible and histories of ancient people.

Now the word “astrologer” need not send shivers down someone’s spine, as the term implies more than the “astrology” of today’s brand. These were learned and wise men and highly regarded in their cultures.

I also read/heard that they may have been Persian and/or other Eastern peoples who worshiped the God of Abraham (similar to how the Samaritans and Jews were closely related in regards to religion).
