I didnt get a chance to see how the meeting went last week. So how did it go and was there any big news I should know about?

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz had some pointed comments on the authority of the conference itself:
“Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz, of Lincoln, Neb., one of the most conservative bishops, challenged the conference’s authority to speak about the subject at all. He read several quotations from Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, saying that national bishops’ conferences have no teaching authority.”

I noticed that lots of folks on this Forum considered the Bishops’ recent statement on Iraq (suggesting that the US remain there) to be virtually infallible when they should have known that a Conference statement is just a matter of informed judgment. Bruskewitz has it right.

Good for Bishop B. If I read the article correctly the only use of “conservative” was for him, yet I did not read “liberal” applied to any of the bishops?
No, but Bruskewitz wasn’t the only man called “conservative.” He was described as “one of the most conservative…”

OK, my point was the article seemed biased on that point. Who was one of the most liberal?

I don’t know who was there, but I suppose that the most liberal and the most conservative in attendance were one of the usual suspects.

The recap with Raymond Aroyo on EWTN was very good and showed a good deal of the debating and recomendations if you can catch a repeat or see it online.

Two chuckles:
Acting under Vatican orders, they approved a plan to check the theological orthodoxy of all songs sung at Mass.
Does this mean that the Bishops who have been “approving” those hymnals all along haven’t been checking the content?
Barbara Blaine, founder of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, believes bishops still let offenders slip through cracks, particularly foreign-born priests who are removed from ministry here but return to their homeland and are able to serve there. She cited the case of the Maltese priest accused of molesting former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley.
So her definition of “still” is to reference an abuse that happened, what?, thirty years ago??? The priest has been out of the country and retired for years. I suppose we should be glad that she couldn’t cite any recent case that might actually meet the criteria of “still”.

Yes, be glad, but pray that a new case meeting the criteria doesn’t arise.

I think Pope Benedict and Cardinal Arinze need to tag-team leading the next meeting of the USCCB. Sounds like a confusing mess to me.

I personally think it’s time to dis-band the USCCB.

God help our U.S Bishops. :gopray2:

It is so sad that the USCCB does not seem to be able accomplish much in a substantive way. Yet we still need some sort of national coordinaiton.

But look on the bright side, they get more done than the United Nations!👍

I guess I just wish our national coordination would be coordinated and facilitated by Rome!!!

For years media accounts of the USCCB led me (and I suspect many others outside the faith) to believe the church was something it is not. Every “progressive” statement seemed to be highlighted. It was a surprise to find , after coming on the net, figures such as Bruskewitz, Chaput, Neuhaus, Burke and Euteneuer.

Not blaming the USCCB. The media was (and is) the problem. But it is a shame so many were and probably still are not able to cut through the fog liberal reporters throw over the meetings and to see the real church.

If they’re not to blame, who is? Say “responsible” rather than blame. I’m sure the USCCB are paying a PR dept. or consultants a hefty sum every year and not using resources right at their fingertips:

Why aren’t statements like the one about receiving Communion read from the pulpit in every parish? Condensed, talking-point versions inserted in bulletins? Links provided on parish websites?

The Bishops seem to have an anti-publicity campaign, chasing down sites that quote their statements (or even daily readings) for copyright violation

We can’t blame the media for only reporting the “sexy” stories, it’s the Bishop’s job to get teach the faithful, not depend on the six o’clock news or make us go looking for it.

I agree with you, but wonder if fault is of the USCCB, or of individual bishops. Apparently national conferences of bishops do not have teaching authority. So the USCCB can rightly clarify issues, but its up to each bishop to make the results known (and understood) in his diocese.
