When my brother told he was planning on proposing to his gf and then told me how he planned to do it I nearly face palmed. It’s kind of crazy how some guys think when it comes to proposing.

I ended up getting a book for him called “How to propose without screwing it up: 50 common mistakes you won’t know you’re making and how to avoid them” on amazon.com and he couldn’t stop thanking me enough.

Needless to say his proposal was completely flawless and he had every detail covered thanks to the help of the book. His fiancé was also over the moon and tells the story of their proposal every chance she gets. There are a lot of minor details that add up and can make he occasion super special to your fiancé.

And note, your proposal should be special and not ordinary. It should reflect how much you love the other person.

I would highly recommend you buy that book (it’s also avail at wowproposals.com) and utilize the information within in

Best of luck!

This thread is about proposals themselves, not what came before or after, so maybe people who did discuss marriage just didn’t write about that because that wasn’t the question.
Exactly. A large number of posters - including the OP - said something along the lines of “I already knew she’d say yes” or “She knew I would be asking”. Romance and planning aren’t mutually exclusive.

My wife and I definitely had tons of discussions about marriage and our future life together. We discussed everything. But as you said, this thread was about how you proposed. It’s a big assumption to conclude people jumped into it without having those discussions (I’m sure some did, but it seems like a minority in this thread).

You can “decide together” but still have the romance of the traditional “he asked, she answered” 👍

My husband’s proposal was…interesting. We got engaged right before he deployed, during my junior year of university and had a 1.5 year engagement.

At Notre Dame, there’s a tradition that if you walk around both of the lakes on campus, you’ll get married. He was coming to visit and we planned on doing that together. The actual proposal part was supposed to be a surprise but I called it haha.

Anyway, his sister ended up making him two hours late because she decided she hated me soon after she introduced us and we started dating…so once he got away, we went to the lake, fed the ducks (and a random squirrel) for fifteen minutes, he proposed, and we ran to catch the bus to his parents’ house in Chicago. Even though I was pretty peeved at his sister, it was still very romantic!

👍 Right, Wampa. The “what” shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. But the “when” and “how” certainly can be. 🙂

DH and I had talked about getting married, but not set anything when he went to Marine boot camp. He called one Sunday and started talking about coming home on a certain date to get married. I said, “Ah, you haven’t asked me yet!” Oops…he then proposed nicely 🙂

That was Valentine’s Day…we made arrangements for a wedding the end of March. We were so young and poor back then (19!). I told him I didn’t need an engagement ring…just pick up a wedding band. A couple days later two packages came…one was a dozen roses and the other held a beautiful diamond ring.

We celebrate 40 years of marriage this March.

I wish you as happy and blessed life together as we have had, OP.

Some 43 years ago I asked the lovely and loving woman who has been my wife now for almost 42 years if she would spend the rest of her life with me and she said sure. I thought that meant we were engaged. No, no, no. I learned a day later that it was not until I actually asked “will you marry me?” and she replied “yes I will” that we we engaged.

43 years and still learning :yup:

Also an idea for the OP: I asked her parents for their permission before I asked her. That was the frosting on the cake for her family. I went from being a guy her Dad tolerated to being “like a son” to him in that moment.

Yup, I’m planning to ask her dad, too!
