Interesting, see how the Catholic translation reads. St Paul is here recalling Old Testament passages and using them to encourage Christians when they face trials:

You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons:

“My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord b or lose heart when reproved by him;

6 for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.”

7 Endure your trials as “discipline”; God treats you as sons. For what “son” is there whom his father does not discipline?c

There’s often something lost in terminology. One of the best interpretations I’ve heard is by EWTN personality Doug Barry.

He stated that while the man is the spiritual “head” of the household, the woman is the spiritual “heart”. Men and women ARE different, and bring different skills. Both the head and heart are important…just serve different purposes. Ideally, a household has both.

I am guessing if I decided to leave my spouse for another, and he came to punish me or it, the cops would step in.
The question is of spiritual authority not legal right. There is also a difference between what God’s law obligates us to freely submit to, and what God’s law allows us to force another to submit to.
