Hello.

I was wondering how Catholic clergy (especially priests) learn canon law. I know that priests have to attend seminary prior to ordination, but what methods are used to ensure that priests learn the Code of Canon Law and are sufficiently able to apply it to their religious service?

Thanks for reading.

All seminaries have courses in canon law. Usually canon law of marriage is its own separate course(s).

Seminarians are tested in canon law the same as they are all their other subjects.

The actual amount of canon law an average priest needs is generally relegated to canons regarding marriage. Parish priests don’t usually have to deal with most aspects of the Code, for unusual circumstances that crop up each diocese has its own canon law office to assist parish priests.
