How do catholics know what is to be taken literal or not in the Bible?

For example the Red Sea and Noah’s Ark.

Is there anything like this talked about in the catechism?

The Church has no dogmatic pronouncement on either event. The basis of the stories must be historical, however not every detail is a hard scientific fact. The purpose of the Bible is not scientific but spiritual.
