I have to admit I don’t know too much about eastern rites or the orthodox churches, so I’ll try to ask clearly as I can.

How do eastern rites view extra ecclesiam nulla salus? Are there eastern fathers that have written about salvation outside the Church? Also, does anyone have any reputable sites they can point me in about their writings? Thanks.

Also, does anyone know if the orthodox churches have an interpretation similar to extra ecclesiam nulla salus? Thanks.

Pax et Bonum,

“We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not.”

Salvation and grace could possibly exist outside of what we recognize as the Church on earth. Its possible that the Church does exist in other ecclesiastical communities. Problem we, we are not sure.

I believe that is the Eastern view.

First of all, "Eastern Rites| have no opinions on . . . nothing. Rites are forms of worship, thinking etc.

Eastern Catholic Particular Churches . . . now these are composed of actual living human beings.

The Patristic theology is unequivocal - outside the Church there is no salvation. The writings of the Fathers are all there to borrow from the library for purposes of studious reading - we shoul all go for it!

Ok that makes sense. I was under the impression that was the case (Eastern Rite Churches), but I just thought I’d ask. I know the theology of Theotokos came out of the East, and I am curious about whether any of the Eastern Fathers wrote about this and how they interpret this teaching. I am under the assumption that there are different approaches to the dogmas like Original Sin and the Assumption/Coronation of Mary.
Is that correct?

Too right!

That just leaves the small (ha, ha!) matter of defining the boundaries of “the Church” :D. And from what I’ve seen, it depends very much on who you ask as to the answer you’ll get.

(Just thought I’d throw that tiny grenade in !)

😃 Any nuanced answers from any members would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’m not particularly known for my subtlety or ability to nuance things neatly, so I’ll leave that to others for now :D.
