Is it accurate that evangelicals believe that sanctification enable!s a Christian to do the works of Jesus Christ?

Or, after after a Christian is saved by faith and declared righteous, that sanctification empowers one to do the works of Jesus Christ?

Thank you

Any evangelical with reasonable Bible training understands sanctification (to be set aside for Christian service). Your expanded question asks about their understand of how sanctification relates to service subsequent to salvation. The answer to this is as variable among evangelicals as it is among Roman Catholics.

Sanctified service can mean witnessing for Jesus with the gospel, serving the practical (physical needs) for others, or both.

Another part of sanctification not well understood or embraced by evangelicals is the honor bestowed by the Church subsequent to beatification. Nevertheless most evangelicals have some reasonable appreciation for the veneration of the Saints.

In the Lutheran tradition, we understand sanctification as the process by which the Holy Spirit conforms us to the image of Christ. The Holy Spirit who has called us by the Gospel, and dwells within us uses the means of God’s word proclaimed, specifically the law, to call us to new obedience in Christ, to repent when we sin, and the proclamation of the gospel to have confidence that Christ forgives us when we do sin so that we might not come to despair. Luther’s Small Catechism gives a pretty good explanation of what we believe in this regard in its explanation of the Third Paragraph of the Apostle’s Creed.

What variations have you heard amongst Catholics? I’ve heard only the one which the Catholic Church Teaches. But, if you’ve heard variations, please tell us what you’ve heard.

Do the Lutherans, and I am aware that there are differences of ideas in synods, believe
we can do good deeds?

I live in St. Louis, MO. and have had a regular diet of LCMS.

It seems you are clearly saying that YES we can do good.

THANKS to all!

Dear All:

I have not had the time to carefully study all the denominations points of belief on sanctification. Who would?

However, I am moving toward the idea that Christians have a great deal in common on sanctification.

I asked in the post before this about LCMS. I see that they have agreement with the other Christians.

God makes us grow in His image and likeness.

In my understanding, this agreement is amazing!

We seem to agree that God will make us grow and make us good.

Not so much heard as in read from scripture. The products of sanctification are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 12:1-13 (especially …4-6 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all…)

This holds true for Roman Catholics, evangelicals, and all genuinely redeemed by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My apologies I should have been more clear in the understanding of “variable” being used in the place of “diverse”.

In my judgment, sanctification is an important point of agreement among the Christian denominations. I have failed in noticing the agreement.

If there is agreement, and it sounds as if it is, it should be shouted from the highest mountains. All Christians want to grow up and be good and holy.

Love to hear the judgment of others on this!

THANKS!
