Hi

From time to time - and it doesn’t happen often - some people I know have claimed that only the original manuscripts of the Bible are inerrant, and that the translations of the Bible since are not inerrant.

How would I best answer this?

Thanks!

They are essentially correct. A translation is not necessarily inerrant. Go to your local bookstore (if they still exist) and see how many different English translations of the Bible there are. Some of them are pretty bad. The original biblical authors were inspired by the Holy Spirit but translators are not.
The only “exception” to this is the Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures). This translation, and the books that are found in it but not in Hebrew, have long been considered inspired.
