How do I answer my son's questions about the necessity of Confession?

My 19 y/o son questions the importance/necessity of confessing his sins to a Priest. We are practicing Catholics, attend Holy Mass regularly and are active in our Parish…We’ve raised our chidren (4) in the faith. My son attends Mass w/out having to be pushed…but has shared his concerns regarding confession to me…would appreciate any suggestions here…
