How do I choose a patron saint?

I am a Roman Catholic, and my friends are always praying to their patron saints, but I don’t know how to choose mine. My friends say it’s partly to do with their names, but my first name isn’t Christian (it’s Jack), so that option is more or less ruled out. My family isn’t Catholic, we have: one Anglican, one (non-practicing) Christian scientist, and one agnostic, so we have quite a range! So they don’t have a patron saint I could adopt. Overall I am quite stuck where to look! and how to find one that suits me. Could you give me some suggestions of popular saints?
 
“Jack” is a popular nickname for “John,” which is the name of a multitude of Christian saints. You might start your search by reading through the biographies of some of the saints named John (source).
