Can somebody tell me how it’s done. Is there a certain process one has to go through, can I just proclaim it in my heart that I want them to be my patron. I want St. Joseph as my patron saint.

I see from your profile that you are in RCIA. When you receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, you can make it “official,” since most people take the name of a patron saint at Confirmation. But until then, get a head start by asking Saint Joseph to pray for you, and by imitating his virtues.
There’s a great little book about Saint Joseph called Joseph the Silent, by Michel Gasnier. It expands on the little bit we know about Joseph from Scripture to paint a vivid picture of Saint Joseph’s life and character.

I think the saint chooses us. One day I suddenly realised that I was talking to Saint Anthony of Padua all the time. Then out of the blue, after I had sent some religious publications etc to a parish in India, I received a card from the priest with a relic of St Anthony.

I feel like he follows me sometimes. I share my birthday with his feast day. I think for a while I was looking and one day I realized he was mine too. Funny since he helps us win we have lost something…

A good idea would to just first read about as many saints as you can. Then, think about which saints you identify with the mostl.
You might want to search for saints who are the patrons to your occupation. For me, my career is a big part of my life, so I choose St. Gregory the Great…the patron saint of musicians and educators.

Interesting post. I chose St. Thomas More becuase he’s probably the Catholic writer and historical figure I took the most interest in when I was a Baptist. He’s been good to me. Later on I felt I was being adopted by St. Benedict, which is appropriate, since St. Thomas More was a Benedictine Oblate! So one day I “officially” asked St. Benedict to also be my Patron Saint. No one ever said you can’t have two!

The saints are mab at me!!!
I constantly change patrons!!! LOL!!!
But i would have to say the St. Francis Xavier sticks out all the time at me! And St. Francis of Assisi!

If you feel St. Joseph is your patron saint, that probably means he is. I don’t think there is a set formula for how you arrive at it - it depends on the person, and on the saint 
As a convert I probably picked a rather predictable saint considering his patronage: Augustine. I don’t mind that it was a predictable choice - not only was it his writings that made me take the Church seriously, but it was in his writings that I learned more about myself, for good and bad. St Augustine and his mother St Monica were the first to feel like family. In all conscience I couldn’t have picked anyone else even though I feel a huge devotion to Sts Pio and Maria Goretti.

When I was going through RCIA this question came up. The director of the RCIA (I guess thats the right term) got with each of us individually. When we were talking I asked about having a saint’s name/whatever. lol She said I didn’t need to add anything to my name. ( I had heard her asking some others about whether they would use their regular names or that of a saint.) Anyway, I already have a name that has several saints with it.
My middle name is Elizabeth. There are five saints with that name. But the one closest “feast” is on July 4, and my birthday is July 17. On my birthday it is that of The Blessed Martyrs of Compiegne. It is also the day after the one for Our Lady of Mt Carmel. So I have several I can call my patron saints!!
