I’ve never written down my sins. But one time, the Examination of Conscience used during a communal penance service was expecially effective. I brought my copy into the confessional to follow. As I’ve mentioned before, I prefer face-to-face confession to behind the screen. I just showed the priest that I had the paper and used it as a guide.
Remember that the priest is there to help you through the process. I think that sometimes we forget that. We see God as judge, or think that the priest or person that we are talking to is going to judge us. I haven’t forgotten what it was like to be teased as a kid.
Jesus came into the world to lift up the outcast, to heal the sick and injured, and to make our brokenness whole. It is God’s desire that we be reconciled to Him. He welcomes that first step, no matter how timid. The priest, standing in Christ’s place, will help us take that next step.
The intimacy to which Christ calls us, despite our sinfulness, can be intimindating. It’s not what we are used to. It’s not what we see in everyday life.
