How do I counter the influence of my daughter's Baptist friends?

I have a daughter who moved away to Houston to start her career as a teacher. After several months of being lonely, she was befriended by some Baptists. She started going to their service and she fell in love with them. I really think it is the people and not the church she loves. She has become very close to God and loves reading the Bible, but now she is talking baptism. She also is interested in a young Baptist man. She has promised me that before she does anything she will talk to a priest so he can explain what the ramifications of a second baptism are. Should she go alone or is it okay to bring her love interest with her. I think she is afraid if she does not become Baptist, then the relationship is over before it began.

Hi,

Your daughter is operating on the good feelings she is receiving from her new-found friends. She needs to be concerned with the truth. Baptists believe that Baptism is a symbol of one’s commitment to Christ. They don’t believe that it actually does something to the soul and is necessary for salvation as we do–even though Jesus said "Unless a man is born of water ant the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (Jn 3:5).

Whether she goes alone or not should be up to her.

I suggest that you give her Steve Ray’s book, “Crossing the Tiber.” See this:
