How do I counter this Overpopulation argument?

You’re not using it correctly.

The first term of such an expression needs to be between 1 and 10. Move the decimal point back, and adjust the power term accordingly.

Also, in computing, an asterisk rather than an X is used for multiplication; and in formats with no superscripts, the " *10 to the" expression is replaced by a capital E followed by the power.

So your figure should read, “1.902664 * 10 to the 11th power”

or, better, “1.902664 E11”.

Dude, my MA is in English. What do you expect?

The “overpopulation” argument is promoted by “pro-choice” people as an excuse for murder. There are plenty of resources for everyone. Also, the population is predicted to peak in 2050 and then it’s expected to decrease. There is an illusion of a growing population because people are living longer, but as people have fewer children and the elderly die off, the population will decrease. Many countries are already having problems with this.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. Outta the park dude! (Or dudette, sorry)

👍
That was hilarious.

I forgot to mention what I think might be the best counter to the hypothesis of over-population: it doesn’t matter.

The purpose of life is not to have enough resources to be comfortable and prosperous (however desirable that may be)…it is to glorify God and get to heaven. The more people born, the more souls end up in heaven. The worse life gets for humans, the more opportunity there is to show love and charity! 🙂
Don’t give the crazy enviormental and prochoice wackos any ideas or they will start saying things like Heaven is overpopulated too.:D:p

This thread is short on facts, but abundant in name calling with those that have an opposing point of view.

LOLOLOL

I just did a quick count, and found 42 facts and 3 name callings in this entire thread (if you count “yuppie” as a name…otherwise its 2, and those 2 were said in jest). 😛 I didn’t count opinions or obviously contestable statements as fact.

I think we’re doing pretty well as a mature conversation…but there’s always room for improvement. 🙂

People who believe in overpopulation do not believe in God. If you believe in God, and that God creates children, and that God is all-powerful and loves us, then overpopulation goes against belief in God.

Since God creates children, why would he give us more children than he wants us to have?

Of course when this comes up as a justification for abortion, it IS atheists who bring it up.

40 of which came from me.😃

Seriously, most of those “facts” you cite are simply opinions based on seriously incomplete data. One of the benefits of taking a population of data and drawing an unbiased conclusion from them is that you know what will subsequently ensue. One can’t do that if they start with the conclusion and work backwards.

They don’t believe in God so they don’t believe in Heaven either.

here’s a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry who hopes to help get the human race onto another planet. 👍

Hello TheRealJuliane,

I think the issue may be a bit more subtle. Regardless of whether humans can become “overpopulated,” we certainly have the ability to destroy the God given resources that exist to sustain an expanding population through our own choices. At that point “overpopulation” could theoretically exist not as a reflection of imperfection in God’s design, but as a consequence of our actions. One can debate as to whether this has occurred or may occur in the future without being athiest or pro-choice.

Really? What sort of God do they believe in?

The God that the Catholics worship. You’re equating people that believe that finite, God-given resources should be used responsibility with God-haters.

You really aren’t serious, are you?

Do you have any facts relevant to the discussion, or just inflammatory opinions?

The “world is over crowded” argument is garbage. Total rubbish, and among the most absurd arguments out there. So foolish, that few people even try anymore.

If we took the entire population of the world, pushed them into the state of Texas, everyone could live comfortably. It would be about as dense as the city of London. People complain about famine, but that’s because most countries that have famine have their food industry controlled by the goverment. That’s the problem.

There are huge amounts of children born in the world every day-they’re a blessing. They could cure cancer, paint beautiful paintings, write amazing plays, or just be really nice people to hang around with. (I’m a bachelor with no children, by the way)

This myth makes me burn…
Well-said.

At the root of it all is a fear of procreation, of human dignity itself. Follow the ‘green’ money and you always end up at the same place: the myth that we need to abort and deny care to elderly inconvenient people.

This nonsense first took hold in the late 1960s/early 1970s. As a society, we seem to be chasing our own tail.

Oh, and Garyjohn, it’s not pro-choice; it’s pro-ABORTION. The two words do not mean the same thing.
