I have a family member who is not a practicing Catholic, and has recently begun cohabitating with her boyfriend. The reason is the all too common response of, “let’s see how it works out” and “they don’t want to be burned again”. They are both also divorced from their previous marriages, but only by civil law. She was married in a non-Catholic Christian Church before, and I’ve encouraged her to begin the annulment process.

I understand this is common nowadays unfortunately, but I’m trying to find the proper way to deal with this situation as a faithful Catholic. My wife and her were upset that I wasn’t supportive of this arrangement but I’ve been resolute in what I believe. At the same time, I’m trying to be as charitable as possible because I don’t want to drive all that disagree with me further away from the Church and its beauty and teachings. The matter also gets complicated since they live in the same neighborhood, and I have impressionable young children that now see what’s happening.

Please if anyone has any advice on how to properly witness, in addition to being a good Catholic and family role model which I’m trying to do will help. I also don’t want to be or appear supportive of this, and wonder any recommendations on how to be loving and charitable to them given the closeness of our relationship.

Thanks and blessings.
