How do I defend traditional marriage against this straw man fallacy?

I seen an interesting meme on Facebook yesterday. It’s a picture of the people in Washington, D.C. who are supporting traditional marriage with a quote on top saying “Imagine how stupid you are going to look in 40 years”. And on the bottom, a picture of protesters from years ago protesting interracial marriage. The conclusion; traditional marriage supporters are nothing more than bigots and in 40 years they will look “stupid” just as these racist people from the past.

I know this is a straw man fallacy, but to someone who doesn’t know anything about the issues or apologetics all together…it can draw up a pretty good illusion.

So my question is; when faced with this fallacy, what or how are some ways I can defend my position on traditional marriage?

At that time, interracial marriage involved a man and woman with the possibility of procreation and building society.

Easy, don’t waste your time. People like that have no interest in rational arguments, and have given themselves over to the emotion-based “feel good” rationality of “equality” and “tolerance.” You will accomplish nothing because they’ve blinded themselves to reality. Basically, they’ve put their fingers in their ears and are going “la la la la I can’t hear you la la la.”

You Know that it is wrong, and you Know that in the end you will be vindicated; this is a non-negotiable issue, and the common populace’s opinions on the matter are irrelevant. There were likely signs to the same effect during the Roe v Wade era, and I don’t think as single one of the people who defended the unborn child then feel stupid about it now; likewise, we will continue to know that we are right regardless of society’s opinion on the matter. Remember, you are not here to please society, or those idiots with the signs, you are here to please God and uphold His law.

But, if you insist on rebutting it; point out that the Church supported interracial marriage because there was no impediment to procreation. Those people were a man and a woman seeking to enter into a lasting relationship that was open to the gift of life. That meme is making the apple and oranges fallacy (I don’t know the actual name of the fallacy), in that they are comparing two things that cannot be compared. One is a relationship in line with nature, the other is not. The person making the comparison is, for lack of a more charitable phrase, a moron.

People are unable to choose their race. They are, however, able to choose whether to act on their behavior habits.

This is it above. “Man and Woman He created them.” Not Man - Man, or Woman-Woman, or Bi-Bi, or Transgender-Transgender, and so on so forth.

Point out that you will look less stupid than their (the poster couples) kids.

Or…put up a photo of a “NAMBLA” type couple (look it up…I don’t want to describe any further) and say “These people can’t wait 40 more years!..ACTION NOW!!”

And really, that’s been my main argument. In regards to your “NAMBLA” analogy, would it be a straw man to say; I love my brother too can I marry him? Or; I love my dog can I marry her?

To me the key word is “equality” (hence; “equal” rights).

A man and a man or woman and woman are not equal in parallel to a man and woman because they cannot produce children…but I’ve found this argument leads to the conclusion that many married people including elderly couples cannot produce children…

I’m new to this argument. Any more thoughts or discussions are appreciated and encrouaged.

You could ask them when in human history did any society encourage homosexual unions as normal? Inter-racial marriages have always happened.

Proverbs 26:4

Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will also be like him.

You know it’s a fallacy, so at most, point that out.

You could also say it’s an idiocy, but that would not be charitable.

In a lot of ways it is not such a stupid argument. Like they are trying to get at, 40 years ago…what sane person would think 2 gays would be granted the right to marry? It’s only a couple of steps away…the whole adult / child marriage thing. Somehow we have been brow-beaten and brainwashed into accepting homosexual behaviour as normal and even desirable. We have been sexualizing our children for at least 2 generations. Since 1 parent housholds are increasing, children get stuck with doing grown up things…even in some cases filling grown up emotional support roles in the absence of the other parent. Kids can make a lot of adult decisions without consent. Some states kids can marry each other. It’s coming…

If we look back on how and when the whole gay agenda started to be pushed, I’m sure there are some different ideas, but at some point it was portrayed in the media in a positive light to get us used to the idea and it snowballed from there. Watch for some show to come out in the next 10 years with an adult / child relationship. It’ll be a 20 year old dude who somehow ends up taking care of a 16 year old chick (because of a heart breaking series of events in her life…and he is so kind).

Exactly what I say every time. If I throw in examples of other choices people can make, it really makes the fur fly!

…and it has the added bonus of upsetting the crossover PETA crowd…

Do we have any examples of this idea (marriage between a man/woman with a child) seen in other countries with same sex marriage rights?

I guess I would ask; which country has had the longest history of legalized gay marriage and do we see tolerance growing among them with the idea of marriage between an adult and child?

Or better yet, are there laws permitting adult/child marriage in other countries?

Ps. Apologies for not researching these questions myself as I am stressed for time and only checking back here periodically. Thanks!

Interracial marriage, same-sex “marriage” and the Catholic Church

Bans on Interracial Marriage were About Eugenics, Not Redefining Marriage
