How do I distinguish between superstition and what is ok?

I heard on the radio recently that putting a statue of St Joseph upside down in your yard to sell your home was a superstition. Would asking St Anthony to help you find something that is missing also be a superstition? What about wearing the Miraculous Medal? How do I tell what is superstition & what isn’t??

Hi,

Asking the help of a saint’s intercession is sound Catholic teaching. But burying the statue of a saint upside down in the ground is completely arbitrary and irrational. It has nothing to do with anything. The Church has never taught such a practice.

Superstition is defined as a belief or notion not based on reason or knowledge. It aptly applies here.
