A priest does not have to understand your language in order to give absolution. If I speak Polish and there is no Polish speaking priest, I can go to the priest who speaks only Korean and be fully absolved.

So, if someone who speaks only ASL cannot find a priest who understands ASL (BTW, it is worth a call to the Chancery office to see if there is a priest who DOES sign) and they do not feel comfortable with an interpreter, then they are not required to write down their sins. They can simply sign the confession and the priest gives absolution. Priest could write the penance down on a slip of paper.

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE…

Please read the OPs question before answering.

The OP is deaf, not the priest.

Oftentimes, people who are deaf can still speak.

The OP did not ask about an inability to speak, but an inability to hear. Please note the difference.

There’s no need to write down any sins.

The priest might write any advice if needed. Of course, this will avoid the priest giving a long homily instead of just confession advice!

All the priest actually NEEDS to communicate is the penance. It’s rather easy for him to write down “say 500 Hail Mary’s” show the paper to the penitent, then tear it up.

Then, the priest pronounces the Absolution. The penitent doesn’t need to actually hear it, only to know that he’s doing it. That part will be pretty obvious.
