How do I do the right thing?

I’ve been brought up non practicing protestant and my partner is a lapsed Catholic…I have promised that I will help raise his children in the Catholic Church but how do I do that when their Dad isn’t following the Church. I don’t want to undermine my partner but to a. Point I feel like I’m more willing than he is.

God bless you for your integrity. May I ask if you promised that to God or maybe to his parents? I don’t know if anyone can give you advice without knowing what your personal beliefs are. What is your opinion about the Catholic Church?

Where is the children’s mother? And it is his responsibility, not yours, to raise them, and to raise them Catholic.

I don’t want to undermine my partner but to a. Point I feel like I’m more willing than he is.

The situation you seem to find yourself in is one where you feel the responsibility, bit you do not have the authority. That isn’t really going to work if the person with authority (the children’s father) doesn’t do what he is supposed to do, because the most you can do is to support and refrain from undermining his efforts.

Just do as Millions of other mothers had done before you… Just tell him your taking them to church… he is more that welcome to join you if he wants, but if he is not interested he can stay home and do Housework/ Yardwork… and after Mass you take the Child/Children to a nice park or store and have ice cream or cake or whatever as a weekly treat…
and when they turn 16 they can make up there own minds, at least you did your best.

This is good. I’d say “18” though, since 16 yr olds still have that Early Teen Irrationality Business going.

In your shoes, I’d call the local priest and stop by and chat with him, tell him what’s up and why and you should be good as gold.
