How do I explain abortion to my son?

My son is 11 1/2. He knows the mechanics of the facts of life, and we’ve talked about spiritual aspects as well. The other day, during Mass, he leaned over and whispered, “What’s abortion?” I told him I’d tell him later and then forgot. When I did remember, I wasn’t sure how to address the issue with him. Could you give me some guidance, please?

Just tell him what it is. Tell him that it is the killing of a baby in the womb for the convenience of not having to take care of it if it were born–and it is a mortal sin.
