How do I explain Confession to non-Catholics?

What counsel would you give to someone who is a convert to the Church and whose family members are non-Catholic Christians, who struggle with accepting confessing sins to a priest? My conversations with them on this subject are very strained and I don’t like talking about it because of the roadblock question I inevitably encounter from them: “So you’re saying my sins aren’t forgiven?”
