How do I explain reverence at Mass to Catholics?

I attended a Mass recently that was very disturbing to me. Everybody was jumping, dancing, and clapping during the opening and closing songs, and I was even pushed a bit because I wasn’t. In addition, few kneeled for the consecration. People noticed how shaken and distressed I was, and I had a few conversations about it, one ending in: “Times are changing, this is a new generation, get with the program!” (It was an all-teen Mass, celebrated by the bishop.) How do I respond? I would really like to help these people understand where I am coming from.

One possible response might be, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever Heb. 13:8], and as God he deserves our reverence. If you’ll please excuse me, I’d like to make some prayers of reparation.” Then turn away, find a quiet spot in the emptying church, and pray.
