How do I explain Sunday obligation to my daughter and her mom?

The non-Catholic mother of my Catholic daughter allowed the child to go on a 3 day camping trip and miss Sunday mass. She went on Monday to “make up” for the Sunday obligation.

How can I explain to my daughter who is 13 about the true Sunday obligation? Better yet, how can I explain to her mom?
