My father, who is a Catholic after conversion from Baptist as a young man, has made his disgust with Vatican wealth known to us, his family. It makes him very angry when he considers all the poor of the world, famines and such yet the Vatican has untold millions in gold objects, art and other treasures. This extended to our local diocese when he learned the bishop lives in a pretty extravagant waterfront rectory. He honestly feels the Church is hypocritical asking parishioners for money all the time when untold wealth exists.
The only thing I’ve really found on CA is that much of that wealth can’t be liquidated due to it’s pricelessness and/or sacredness. I’ve also read somewhere that many of the treasures were donated or presented to the Church as gifts and it would be wrong then to sell them off. I don’t think either of these is enough to explain to my Dad why sufficiently. Is there a website or perhaps some argument you can offer me that I can present to my Dad to ease his anger over this issue?
