How do I explain the vision of Mary at Fatima holding her heart?

I was reading a book on our Lady of Fatima to my 8 yo grandson, “Jay”, who was recently baptized. He spent 4 yrs in foster care; who knows what he was taught specifically, but he did know 1 yr ago that Jesus is our Savior & Christmas is His birthday at least. He also has had his 1st confession. I got to the part where Mary appeared to the children, and showed them her Immaculate Heart. He remarked, “Wait a minute; she took out her heart??” I said something like, “Well it wasn’t really her heart…” and kind of left it hanging. It was bedtime & I was forced to stop there.

I am pretty sure this is the book:
Our Lady Came to Fatima by Hume

I feel like I should still follow up on this with “Jay”.
My thinking on this so far is:
When Mary appeared, she had a glorified body.
People often think of the Heart as the center of our Spirit, where true Love comes from.
So God uses this vision as a way to tell us how much He and the Blessed Mother love us.
Am I on the right track?

It’s been about a month since that incident. He does not live close by. He is a bright kid. Parents are appreciative of my helping him with catechesis (both are Catholic, mom’s a convert of 6 yrs.).

Suggestions appreciated.

The children saw her holding her heart in her hand, so seeing as children at the age of 8 are not able to think abstractly yet, or understand metaphors, I want to know the best way of explaining this vision to a child.

It’s a metaphor.
Explain to him that when people say something is “cool” it doesn’t necessarily mean that something is ice cold.
Someone gives us their heart…means they love us.
He can grasp that.
