I not baptized in the Catholic Church yet, I start my RCIA next month. I’m shamefully in a current state of serious sin, and I fear the condition of my soul. I know I can’t receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation until I am baptized, but how would someone in my situation at least remove their soul from mortal sin, what if something happens to me before I’m baptized. I’m very worried.

You can try to make an act of perfect contrition.

This means that in addition to ‘stopping’ whatever mortal sins you are committing, that you thoroughly repent them, NOT ‘just’ because you might go to hell (of which you’re worried) but totally, freely, and sincerely because these sins offend God. IOW, you take ‘you’ totally out of the equation and focus directly on God. Repent, not because of sin’s effect on YOU, but because of sin’s effect on God.

This is very difficult—to stop, and to focus on God and not self–but it is not impossible. You may have to work at this, and pray, over and over, for God’s grace. And you won’t ‘know’ you are free until you do have a sacramental confession. . .but you must still try to be perfectly contrite, even without that assurance. IOW, you must have faith, yet not presume.

I will pray for you. Listen to John Paul II (“Be not afraid”) and to St. Pio (“Work, pray, and don’t worry”) and above all to Jesus ("Come to me, all who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest), fix your mind and heart and soul on God and loving Him totally, and let Him take care of you.
God bless.

An examination of conscience and true sorrow for sin because it offends God is a good start. Pray the Act of Contrition each night before going to sleep offered for the possible sins committed that day and express a true desire for forgiveness. Those sins will be forgiven when you are Baptized. Once you participate in the Rite of Acceptance and become a Catechumen, you would be considered to have received Baptism of Desire if you should die without Baptism.

Baptism will forgive all your sins to that point. Were you to be in danger of death while in the RCIA process, you would be given the sacraments immediately.

Should you die while preparing for baptism, with the intent to be baptized but unable to receive it, you would receive what is known as Baptism of Desire.
1259 For catechumens who die before their Baptism, their explicit desire to receive it, together with repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive through the sacrament.

Go to confession…and tell the priest that you’re not yet finished with RCIA and need help with an act of contrition…as long as you’re not taking up time for other’s confessions (nowadays I can’t see that happening too often). He can’t confer the sacrament on you yet, but it’s good practice methinks for when you can make a valid confession.

Practice makes perfect. 😃

I too have fallen into serious sin a number of times and have felt guilt and shame and at points in my life have felt like giving up because it just seemed (name removed by moderator)ossible. That however was a lie in my situation as no sin is impossible to conquer once we are in Christ Jesus. Thank God for giving me the strength to carry on! Read Romans 8 where St. Paul explains that there are no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. The fact that you are already admitting that you have sinned is the first step, remember God is a merciful God ( Read Luke 15) who awaits for us while we are far away. Now it is time to conquer your sin, oh wait Jesus did that for you already 2000 years ago 🙂 so then you just need to claim your salvation. How do you do this? The best advice I can give you is to read your bible constantly and be open to the Holy Spirit. always ask yourself, do I start my day off with Jesus? Do I constantly refresh myself from the Living water (aka Jesus) throughout the day? Another thing too is to avoid any provision for your sin, or basically anything that awakens or fuels your desire to sin. Also remember that God is a merciful God and that He will help you throughout this period because He loves you unconditionally, He will not abandon you even if you can’t go to confession because you aren’t baptised yet.

God Bless and I will pray for you my friend
