Hi I’m wondering if anyone knows the process to get a child released from Catholic school to go to another Catholic school. I am not asking to be released as a parishioner. I will still remain in the same parish but send my children to another Catholic school as non-parishioner.

Background:
My children’s school was part of the closing/merging in Philadelphia. But since this has happened it seems like no one can give me a straight answer as to who we need to speak to or how to go about the process.

Thanks in advance.

Do they really need “released”? Even if the school wasn’t closing, they are your kids, you would just tell the principal they wouldn’t be coming back.

In your case there isn’t really a school to be released from at this point.

I would think that both answers above would be sufficient. But it does not seem to be. The school that we are choosing says they need to be released. Our pastor is telling parishioners to go see the Bishop. Everyone seems to be pointing in one direction or another. I was hoping that someone who has gone through this would be familiar with this process.

No kidding!? That sounds so odd to me. Go see the Bishop? Of Philadelphia? About transferring from a school that is closing? I guess I’d call the Bishop then, but it seems pretty cut and dried doesn’t it?

By the way, I’m sorry for you that your children’s school is closing. It must be very difficult. I hope the school they are transferring to isn’t too far a distance.

I think this would all depend on your particular diocese.
Each diocese is unique.

For example… on our parish school’s registration forms it requires a “signature from your pastor, or leave blank if you attend this parish”… which I just leave blank.

So, maybe just ask for the registration forms and start from there? 🤷

Actually, it makes sense that the child needs to be released from the old school. That is fairly standard, AFAIK, so the new school can request records, etc. from the old one. However, the schools should be competent to handle the process by themselves. Both schools doubtless receive transfers from the public system. Both schools see children transferred to the public system. Both schools see children transferred from out-of-state when families move. It makes no sense that you’re getting run around like that. The only thing that is potentially disruptive is a mid-year transfer and even that has probably been seen enough that someone will know what to do (possibly with a call to the public school district for advice).

Is the announcement very recent so that the administrators are still figuring out what’s happening?
Is the new school overcrowded already?
