Hello, i have a little situation and i would like some advice. My cousin told me about 3 months ago that he didnt believe in God anymore. It has been on my mind ever since. I could not believe it when he told me, because we used to go to C.C.E. together when we were little, and his mom is religious(still to this day). But, anyways i asked him why and he said it doesnt make sense and he wants to live his own life. I know i could just explain to him what i think and so on… but he has alot going on in his life, his dad left him when he was a baby so his mom raised him by herself. Then he has a step brother who is handicapped, he was born not being able to walk.(his dad is not in the picture) Also, his mom is terminally ill right now, she is at home and will pass any day now.(God bless her heart) I mean after having a life like that, where everything seems like its falling apart around you. I just think right now my cousin needs God the most. But, i dont know how to go about… It hurts my heart that all this has happened to him, but i feel i need to tell him about God… Please help me tell him because i know he will say "why is my life like this? if theres a God? He also said God is a bully out to get people. So i have no idea how to go about this? Please help me to get him to believe in God again! Thanks and please keep us in your prayers!..🙂

You can tell him about your faith and show him, through your mood and life, what your faith gives you.

Ultimately, IMHO, we cannot “convince” anyone of the existence of God. Faith is a gift and a grace. I have never been a fan of the efforts to argue for God’s existence.

You can’t; the Holy Spirit can. Offer up as many prayers as you can on your cousin’s behalf. Say rosaries for him. Light holy candles for him. Ask his guardian angel for help. Ask your guardian angel to intercede along with his.

And have a good answer if and when he does ask you for answers - especially to “why does God allow suffering?” It’s a question human beings have struggled with as long as there have been human beings.

Pray ceaselessly for your cousin. God can do so much more with people than we can. So often people blame God and turn from Him at the times they really need Him the most. I will pray for your cousin as well.

He also said God is a bully out to get people. So i have no idea how to go about this?
Pray for him every single day and refuse to discuss it with him, trying to change the mind of someone like this is like trying to get rid of water by freezing it, it just gets hard. Life is long and the Holy Spirit powerful. You pray and be an example of Christian values, that’s what works.

PRAYER…I pray for my husband everyday that the Holy Spirit will help him. He says he is an Atheist but will tell you that God took his Mother when he was 8 years old and his life was hell afterwards. It is how some people deal with sorrow and life’s problems. As you can see, my husband isnt really an atheist he is just angry at God and that is OK, but the Holy Spirit is the only one that can move his heart at this point. Its hard to for me to accept as well and results in nothing but arguments when I try to convince him otherwise. I can only PRAY…

I’ve got one of those husbands too. I’ll put your husband in my prayers if you will also pray for mine! Mine got angry at God when his parents divorced.

😦

I used to be an athiest. I wasn’t raised going to a Church and was never taught about God. I decided that I was an athiest in my late teens, because I thought science had proven that there was no God. My problem was that I was searching for truth but I was searching in the wrong places. I have talked with many other athiest who also are searching for truth, and they believe they have found it in the philosophy of many present day scientist. A book that can be a huge help to someone looking for Truth, and evidence, that doesn’t come off as too “preachy” is Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. His presentation of evidence and truth can be very appealing to someone in this position. It may not work with everyone, and I don’t know all the details of your situation, but I strongly recomend either getting this book and reading it for yourself to present new outlooks to your cousin, and maybe even giving him a copy. I hope this helps, you will be in my prayers.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am currently reading mere christianity by c.s. lewis. I was thinking about getting him a copy. Because it is a good book, and i think it will provide alot of answers for him.

Good plan! If he will read it and consider its simple, yet very profound apologetics, so much the better! C.S. Lewis reaches many hearts and minds that might otherwise remain closed to the logic of Christianity.

👍

Please pray for him and don’t forget about him in the coming months and after his mother passes on. Actions speak louder that words and he will remember that you cared about him during the times when his life was a trial. Your actions and love will plant a seed. Don’t be shy about your belief and trust in God but don’t nag either. Ultimately we all have to answer the call to believe on our own. It is his responsibility to say yes to God but you can prime the pump with a kind attitude and some encouragement and some info about the faith. We are going through the same thing with my husband’s brother and it is sad but all you can do is try. God Bless you for caring.

Like pretty much everyone else said : pray for him. Show him your faith and Christianity through your works. Be kind, gentle, and understanding. Maybe talk to him about it. Ask him why he doesn’t believe in God anymore. Perhaps you two can have a nice discussion about religion.

You can’t make anyone believe in God. It’s a personal decision that only a person can make for themselves. But you can certainly try to remind him why you believe in God and why he used to too. 🙂

God Bless and good luck!

You can’t convince someone of something they don’t believe and pushing them will only cause tension between you both.
